what does CSX for?
Being old is when you didn't loose it, it's that you just can't remember where you put it.

GDRMco got it two thirds correct. It is c for cheesie and s for seaboard. The x was actually a place holder in the court documents. And it just ended up sticking. They had to add another letter after that since an x at the end denotes a leased unit so that's why in all csx reporting marks it's csxt for csx transportation.

The original name they wanted was First American Railway Transportation System, and the slogan would be "we go like the wind"
But you can read the whole story at http://www.trains.com/content/dynamic/articles/000/000/002/997majiu.asp

C= Chessie, S= Seaboard, and X= symbol of multiplication, or growth.

What does CSX stand for?
CSX was formed in 1980 by the acquisition of the Chessie System Railway and the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad -- thus the 'C' and the 'S.' These two entities brought with them subsidiaries that were not transportation-related, such as resort, video production, and mineral companies. Thus, the 'X' stands for 'and all others.'

I copied this straight from the CSX website. Amazing what a little research and less guessing will
reveal.[:-^][;)] Dave

I guess there's the legal reason and their reasoning. I knew as far as Chessie-Seaboard.

Yep,

I remember: Chessie Seaboard Multiplied. There was a railway magazine article that had two locomotive engineers standing in front of a Chessie unit and Seaboard unit shaking hands, symbolizing the merger.

I still miss the SCL. Many good experiences (70 m.p.h freights, cab rides, very friendly crews, two-track mainlines in long stretches....................sigh!

Modular railroading at its best!
If it has an X in it, it sucks! And yes, I just had my modeler's license renewed last week!

Hey csxmu,

Sure, enjoy the logo. I put it out here knowing half the world would take it. I appreciate you asking.

And for another CSX treat, you can visit a site I whipped up a couple of hours after I had the opportunity to visit CSX's Cumberland, MD facilities. Here it is:

Nice logo LOL!

And they had to add a "T" to the end of their reporting mark, hence CSXT (supposedly the T stands for "Transportation") because a reporting mark ending in an "X" would normally denote a non-railroad owned car

Darth, that link is Super!!

Great shots! I'm excited because I'm planning on having a diesel locomotive servicing facility on my HO layout. I want to make my shop a "Cutaway", so that one can lift off half of the building and see a detailed shop interior complete with tool boxes, cranes, drill presses, machine lathes, foreman's office, furniture, flourescent lights, etc.

What's frustrating is that while there are "Hundreds" of pictures showing shop exteriors, I've had a very difficult time finding "decent" color shots of the INTERIORS of these shops. These Cumberland shots are very helpful!

Thanks again!

Speaking of CSX, I have a photo of a CSX diesel switcher where the trucks tried to take both routes at a turnout, resulting in it sitting sideways between the two tracks.

Consolidated Systems, Holding(leasing,etc.)Company.
Ever accuse a former Seaboard Air Line employee of being an Atlantic Coast Line Retiree?
Walking up in court to Your Honors bench, the law asks for a title.
Grab one. Off the top of your head.
However, it's been one of the longest if not controversial, questions, (as if abbreviation was ever applied), What does "C.S.X." stand for?

I do understand your point but, I guess you have to fully understand why that site was made and what it means to CSX employees, and CSX.

Interesting site, but it's not very kind to CSX.
