I am wondering why PC is hated so much. We all have different tastes in things. I voted BNSF myself but I am sure there are those that like it. Thats what makes this hobby so great. The different taste in roadnames. Enjoy what you like and be good at it....

Why would I dislike a given railroad. Certainly I have preferences regarding livery, territory of operation, etc., but why would I DISLIKE a certain road. The very question seems sort of juvinile.

Its not juvinile its like football, baseball, hockey, etc......
Its who you like and who you dislike. There was a thread about PC and a lot of people said they DISLIKED PC so I wanted to see who else was disliked!!!

Three guess what I voted, and the first two don't count. [:D]

I am about as anti-PC as one can get and stay out of trouble. [;)] Why? Because of what they did to the New Haven Railroad and the New England region's transportation services at large.

I am also anti-UP for their ridiculous policies over the last year or two that are anti-model railroader.

Finally, I don't like CSX because they can't seem to find their collective rear-ends with both hands, a roadmap, and a flashlight. For example, track maintenance in former Conrail territories are at sustenance levels, and they are constantly returning loaded cars back to their point of origin still loaded. But my feelings toward both CSX and UP pale in comparison to what I think of the Penn Central. [:)]

I don't know enough about BNSF or NS to have an opinion either way.

Those that know a little about history or current railroading can certainly form their own opinions on what is and is not a likable railroad. The question is not juvenile, but certainly the reasons might be.

Not defending UP but they are no worst then any other railroad.Sure they started a licensing fee but CSX has one also..Other roads to follow.
The UP didn't do as much damage to railroading as the not so great Penn-Central.The PC manage to destroy or damage several railroads in the aftermath and failure of the PRR/NYC merger and yet nobody Boos them as much as the UP while the PC is the real villain.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as the NS shutting down their steam program I believe it was a very good thing.
A railroad is in the business of moving freight NOT holding on to the past.
Then again the INSURANCE companies in their GREED ended the steam excursions on ALL railroads expect the UP or some short line.

Frist, all railroads are good railroads. It's just that not all can be the PRR. [:D]

PC did really dumb things. UP ruined the old CNW and it has terrible policies for model railroading. The list could go on. On the other hand, we all have our romantic and commitments. The variety makes this forum fun.

Second, I'm with CNWfan. CSX is doing some weird things in West Michigan these days. My guess is the old Pere Marquette line that runs through Benton Harbor to Grand Rapids is in jeopardy--all of CSX's protestations to the contrary.

My vote: UP is the worst.
Why? Because I have had to personally deal with different railroads in my line of work and none compares to the rudeness and secrecy than UP's heads to be are.

UP gobbled up the CNW, has, and probably will always have a bad paint scheme, and then there's the matter of their grade crossings not working until right before the investigators show up.

The UP should repaint 50% of it's engines like the originals, have totally seperate management for absorbed railroads, and only have high license fees for crappy products! Also I voted PC because of one scientific fact- THEY RUINED ALL OF THE GREAT RAILROADS IN THE EAST

I HATE!! UP because they took over the SP.I know SP ran thier Amtrak trains late, but since UP took over the lateness went from an hour or two to many hours, and in the case of the Sunset, sometimes days.UP recently got the Sunset into L.A. 49[:(!] hours late. That's over two days[:(!]!
Even though I am also a Pennsy fan, my opinion of the Penn Central is: Any railroad that ran GG1s can't be all bad!

For me, no railroad is a bad railroad--as long as it's running. Those that helped bring about the dissolution of others are worthy of criticism. On the other hand, the wonderful smaller railroads that collapsed (and the larger ones) are culpable as well. These days I try and railfan where I can, and also recreate an age that is now gone and will not return.

I voted NS for two reasons: (1) after de-regulation in the early 1980's, they siphoned of a HUGE amount of port business from my hometown of Baltimore (diverting it to Norfolk VA) and made it a virtual shadow of its former self; and (2) the solid black paint, which looked fine on steam power, simply "don't cut it" on diesel locos [IMHO].

No, really, I hate Walmart. I don't know enough about the railroads to really have an opinion! I think UP is misguided with the trade mark debacle. Even my beloved Northern Pacific probably did things which I would not have liked. The monopoly thing needs to be looked at, but it won't happen during this administration! As an uninvolved person, why would you care how CSX is maintaining it's tracks? Living in the west, I have no familiarity with Penn Central, Pennsylvania or the New York Central other than what I've read in the history books. I have read about and have some familiarity with Walmart to make a decision about what I think of them. For the most part, if it runs on rails, I either like or have no opinion about it. Sorry no help here!
