I buy those sand tubes from Walmart, then, after running a magnet through it (you'd be surprised at how much metal is in it), I mix it with Woodland Scenics ballast. I believe the WS ballast is made up of ground nut shells. The sand gives it a nice blend of color, and also helps hold it in place when gluing.

The batches change over time so bags from today do not always match bags from 10 years ago etc.

Thank you. That is what I originally thought, just checking to get a few opinions. Well, time to go mix some ballast.Big Smile

Ballast Question Pt. 2
Posted by ALEX WARSHAL on Monday, January 19, 2015 4:11 PM

I was wondering if anyone knows what the woodland scenics grey blend is a mix of. I have heard that it is a mix of their light grey and their grey. If so does anyone know what the ratio of light grey to grey is. Thanks in advance.
