Eastern Car Works NE Caboose
Posted by novacoach on Thursday, November 11, 2004 12:19 PM
Does anybody have experience of this kit? I'm thinking of doing one for MEC and enjoy building kits. How does it compare with the P2k Caboose - which I can not find undec anyway.
How old a kit is it and does it come with metal or plastic handrails and grabs etc?

Thanks in advance

I saw one of these kits several years ago and wasn't too impressed.

First...........if you like building kits then this is your only choice unless you can find one of the old Gloor Craft kits from many yeras ago. They were wood and etched brass and turned into very nice cars when assembled correctly.

Second.......the ECW kit parts are crude compared to the Life Like P2K car. The fit seemed to be okay but they were just not up to the injection molded quality of the P2K. I can't remember for sure but I believe they had wire for the grabs and handrails.

Stripping the P2K isn't hard. Use brake fluid or Scalecoat stripper.

I have to of the Eastern Car Works cabooses, but haven't started either yet. On inspection I do have to say that they are not up to the detail standard of P2K's model, but they aren't that bad. On the plus side they come with several different steps, a couple of different ends and some other choices for parts. The instruction sheet also describes the various prototypes and which parts to use for which. Not having to hunt down and purchase the various parts that are different than the P2K model gives the ECW model the thumbs up from me!

I don't know, but if there's a good source for these, point me at it, because I need about a dozen. Thumbs down to Life-Like for making only ONE number for the Reading caboose, and making the new release without the sticky 'brakes' only in the late Reading scheme. I need RED ones, not green and yellow.

Wrong type, Reading cabooses were all 4-window, not 2-window.

Until they plated some over during rebuilds and repainting, which is not applicable to my era.

Randy,

One of the ads in December's RMC has the caboose listed for 15.99. Don't have the issue here with me and I'll be away for the weekend, but I'll post it Monday if someone hasn't already.. Internettrains.com has it for 17.00.
