Grime magnets?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 5, 2004 8:09 PM
As I was cleaning wheels on each car of my reefer train, I noticed the P2K wheel equiped cars were a dozen times more dirty than the IMs. In fact, almost all the cars with IM wheels were polished and clean. The P2k sets accumulated all the rail grime like a magnet while the IMs stay polished. And they've all been on the rails the same time period.

I hear people say replace plastic wheels sets with Proto or IM metal ones. It doesn't take long for gunk to collect on Proto wheels. Intermountain's are clearly superior. Better contour, heavier metal, sharper axles. Superior.

Like the man says, your mileage may vary. I have been using P2K wheels for a few years now, and have not had a problem with dirt yet! The cars are all weighted to NMRA specs, with P2K wheels and Kaydee couplers, and have been practicly bullit proof from a maintinance standpoint. Go figgure!

Thats why I bought a 100 pack of intermountain wheels so I could phase out most of my P2K. I prefer the look of IMs and they do run cleaner.
