Walther's new heavyweights
Posted by twhite on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 10:01 PM
[}:)]Okay, after my bitching and screaming about the pretty colors on the new Walther's Heavyweights, I went out and bought one, today. The PULLMAN, the one that's in pullman green. Hey, they've got all kinds of DECALS with the car so that you can decal it for whatever railroad you want. Nice cars--good weight, no droopy couplers, rolls just fine after you give the trucks a little lubing as per the instructions. Made in China--oh well--and looks really good with my Branchline 12-1. So forget my grousing, gang, I'm a happy camper. HANDSOME cars! Thanks, Walthers. And you too, Branchline, now we Pullman Standard types have some reasonably priced nicely detailed full-length cars to put behind our Northerns.!

Hey Tom, where did you get your Walthers Car? LHS? Mind if I ask about what you had to give for it? The best I've seen is about $31...Kinda hoping to get them around $25...maybe thats just wishful thinking.

Also, was browsing the Precision Scale site and saw they are releasing a D&RGW 2-10-2. Do you know anything about it?

Wes--picked it up at my LHS here in Sacramento. Bruce's Trains. Just gotten them in. I paid list, but I was curious--and had also just gotten my paycheck, ha-ha! They should be generally available by now, but don't hope for $25. As to the D&RGW model--the color combination is one that was used on the "Royal Gorge" while the Rio Grande was waiting for their streamline sets. That's why I went with the generic Pullman, I didn't want my 1940's passenger train looking like the 'Ski Train.'
Haven't heard about the Precision 2-10-2, but if it's brass, it's probably a king's ransom. Checked out the Rio Grande 2-10-2's from PFM on the Caboose Hobbies website? Prices will choke you! Think I'll check with Bruce's here in Sacramento about the new one, though. It must MIGHT turn out to be semi-affordable. And Precision Scale makes some pretty darned good locos.

Bo--OUCH! Well, it was a thought. Actually, I have a 'sort of' F-81 that I manhandled (substitue 'kitbash') from an old PFM 2-10-2 that I got at a swap meet about 20 years ago. It's just pretty much boiler cosmetic stuff, plus a new front and a deck-mounted Elesco. It looks close enough that nobody but a fellow Rio Grande freak would notice too much. But for $1640, I could get four or five BLI Santa Fe's, if they ever come out, right?

I've done the math and figured I can get a BLI J1, BLI A class, BLI 3800 Class, Spectrum C&O George Washington set, 2 Spectrum Russian Decapods, and a Specrtum 2-6-6-2 for the cost of that Brass DRGW 2-10-2. Incredible.

Its too bad though. The main reason I have no Grande steam is cost. I wish plastic manufatures would do some. Starting with the L-105.
