Well, like I said, I'd like a solution that doesn't involve cutting up the model, which means I was hoping something I could just drop in the coupler box. I wouldn't mind if I just had to cut up inside the coupler box to change some screw holes or something, but I really don't want to do anything that will require painting.

Check the Kadee web site under conversion data. They show how to install a # 78 to the car

I just picked up an Athearn Genesis Trinity covered hopper, and it's a great model, except it split couplers similar to the accurail ones. I greatly prefer Kadee or McHenry couplers, but the coupler box is scale-size rather than NMRA RP-22 size, so I can't just swap in my regular couplers.
Anybody have advice on putting in a better coupler? Preferably advice that doesn't involve chopping up my nice fancy car.
