A good guess by Paul, a book on CB&Q rolling stock I have shows a photo of a previously mineral red (aka Indian Red) waycar repainted silver in 1959. It probably wouldn't be realistic to have a CB&Q steamer hauling a silver waycar, since the biggest part of the Q's steam fleet was gone by '59.

If you want a caboose (called waycars by the CB&Q) to run behing your steam switcher, a mineral red wood-sheathed waycar by either Walthers or the American Model Builders kit will do great.

I would suggest joining the Yahoo! CBQ group Paul has a link for; they'll be able to answer your questions there.

Good question. And I should know the answer...but I don't. If I had to guess, I would say 1959 since they changed their paint schemes from black and gray, to Chinese Red and gray. Also at that time, they changed their depot and building colors from red with green trim, to white with, uh, white trim (yuck!). Their bridges, water tanks, signals, etc. where also changed from what they called Mineral Red (sort of a red primer looking color) to silver.

To find out for sure, go over to the CB&Q (Burlington Route Historical Society) Yahoo group at:

...join, and ask.

CBQ Caboose

Greetings,

Any one know when the CBQ started using the silver caboose?

Was it used in steam service? I have an old AHM 0-6-0 CBQ I just brought back to life and was wondering what type of caboose to run with it as a local switcher.

Thanks,

Mark
