Actually getting a bit off-topic, I don't really belive in those warranties. The only warranty I belive is Walmart where I can take the item back and get the refund or exchange it. As for sending it - not only do I have to pay for shipping, and from Canada it is expensive, but I have to wait, and be ready to receive an item in the same or worse condition. Because really, what can I do, swear at them ? I've red plenty of stories where people (not in this hobby) received their item back in worse condition.

So far the picture becomes clear that it isn't worth it. And I appreciate everyone's info !

Look at www.firsthobby.com for $220.00. I ordered my Athearn Challenger from them. e-mail them at sales@firsthobby.com and ASK, what are the manufacturer/dealer warranty, terms, conditions , repairs & time frame.
They will answer you

The units I've seen run suck at low speed. The Veranda body rock around starting to about 30 mph. Not like these modern plastic diesels at all. Not quiet either. I'm suprised they tried to sell them for so much.

Well, OK, noone can beat Kato, but they don't make everything we need [sigh]

To which other brand would you compare running Lionel Veranda ?

My main concerd - how does it run compared to Kato ?

I'm not Lionel. Kato has almost(SD-2 exception) a sterling reputation IMO.

For starters http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15471
Understand that the second run was a slight improvement over the first and if it's cheap enough, why not?
Just check out the terms of warranty/repair service etc before you part with your $.

Guys,
What do you think about Lionel's Veranda. From the feature list and pics it looks amazing, but how good is it in practice ? Performance, noise, derailments ?
