Some people do act vain and/or rude on social media sites like Facebook.
Click on your name to go to your profile page, then click on 'Friends', and then unfriend people
Railphotog I'm a co-moderator on a Facebook Group "Modeler's Guild" where we see photos and videos posted continually. Some are how-to, some ask questions, and more. For the worry warts who are afraid of Facebook, they can only access what personal info you post in your profile. Don't want to post your home town or birth date, then don't!

I'm sure I'm no afraid of facebook I just don't like it - not one bit.
It's all the banal nonsence that people insist on telling each other & regretably I need to wade through all that to get to the historical society content which I originally signed up to read. Many of these people are my friends & family who up until now I had no inkling of their tendency to act like twelve year old girls. I am shocked & surprised & to a degree, dissapointed.
Facebook - welcome to the world of triviality.
If I can figure out how to close my page down to then sign up again so that I can just view the pages that interest me, well, then I would.

The only worthwile stuff you will find on Twitter are news snippets and links to content on other websites. (This is due to Tweets being limited to 140 characters.)
I find it much more worthwhile to 'Like' model railroading related pages on Facebook. It helps me find new announcements and new pictures of pre-production models.
As to others requesting you be their friends, much of this is automatically generated and which can be ignored. I personally keep my friends list short, to our immediate family spread all across the continent, some local hobby friends and a few others. I don't accept random requests, telling them that they don't really need to know about my family affairs and events. Easy as that.
Drop by the group and see, there are over 3000 on it now!

Remember also that twitter is limited to 140 characters. About the only thing you could fit within that limit would be brief product announcements - but with 6+ month pre-order windows there probably isn't much need to get the announcement out instantly.
Twitter is good for finding today's location of your favorite food truck.
I have the right to remain silent. By posting here I have given up that right and accept that anything I say can and will be used as evidence to critique me.
I wouldn't have thought that twitter was a natural nesting place for the free exchange of ideas & experiences that model railroaders would see as having much value, but there you go. I followed the links, chutton01 included in his post & there are a lot more model railroad twitter accounts than I could have imagined. I don't have a twitter account - never would, but I don't think that I'm missing out on much by keeping well away from the thing.
Facebook is nearly as bad. I had to open an account on there so that I could keep current with the Historical Society that includes the road I model. That's ok, but then I get all these friend requests from my kids, their friends, my friends, friends & still they keep on coming. People I don't know, don't like the look of & a long list of darn furriners & a rag tag assortment of people who I'm pretty sure are up to no good anyway.Grrrrr.
I suggest you follow forums such as this. You can serach here as well as ask questions.
YouTube has many videos that you can search for topics of interest - many of these are very good with some produced by product manufacturers others by interested individuals.
Also commercial web sites such as this one, NMRA, manufacturers, etc. have sections with tips and how to's. In fact the menu bar above has a How To section.
Also, check out the book section under Shop on the menu bar above. These aren't free, but they provide a lot of in depth information by someone knowledgeale on the subject.
All of these will provide more information on a subject than a 140 character text message.
Good luck
Paul
Well, Model Railroad Hobbyists has a twitter account: Model-RR Hobbyist @mr_hobbyistModel Railroad News also has one: Model Railroad News @ModelRRNewsAmusing enough, @modelrailroader seems to be owned by some guy with a layout named Winsdor & Gypsum RR, and not this company (maybe individual editors/authors have their own accounts?)
I hear about twitter on the news all the time - it seems like something for celebrities and birds - I don't have any intention of creating a twitter account for myself.
I had a facebook account for a few years but I've seen too much abuse in terms of people who are friends saying inappropriate things or causing unnecessary drama so I disabled my FB account.
Whats more, I've heard a lot on the news about how agreements work with major online services; people are basically agreeing to give up their privacy and allowing the use and distribution of all kinds of personal data to be used for commercial and perhaps nefarious purposes. While many of these uses may be "benign", with so much hacking of accounts going on (re: Target etc. and most recently Home Depot) it seems to me it's better to err on the side of caution and leave as little a footprint online as possible, Twitter not withstanding.

Im with MarkR on this. Twitter would not be a good place to learn anything from. Matter of fact I personally cant see a use for Twitter at all. Your best option for learning thru the public is right here. And this includes Disgracebook too.
IMHO, both of those outlets are for those not getting enough reality TV. Both are sites of vanity and lower thinking.
Not sure how you plan on "learning" anything from a twitter account. (?) Isn't it just people chatting back and forth ? Have absolutely no use for it myself, but from what I've seen, it reminds me of Facebook without the pictures ! ;)
