As stated above, you can simply glue a pice of wood under the layout to screw machines to. Another option is to use either Micro Engineering or Peco turnouts as they have sprung switch points and throw with a finger rather than using an additional machine.
I have done it with cutting a larger mounting piece and surface mounting that to the foam. I have a video here Installing a switch machine in 2" foam: http://youtu.be/d87H-zF 7wXg

LIONS like Tortoise. LIONS win every time! (Tortoise make good soup)
Mounting to foam (3/4" in this case) is no problem since I glue them in place with silicone caulk.
LION has not had good luck with extending the actuator rod through a 2" base, but LIONS are clever, and have other ways of mounting tortoises. Check out "The LION and the Tortoise" to see what him did. Maybe it work for ewe two.

nmichael41 Dave I use tortoise switch machines and run a wire through a hole in the foam to the switch. very simple to do. They have mechanical versions as well if your not DCC. There are several different lever mecahnisms you could create as well. I am all DCC so I use the electronic Switch machine. Good Luck...

Tortoise switch machines work very well on DC - DCC Not required. A simple SPDT switch and a DC power supply is all you need. The tricky part is mounting the machine to the foam. Not workable directly. I would mount a piece of craft wood to the foam with construction adhesive (after suitably drilling and routing it for the machine) then the next day mount the machine to the wood.

I have been out of model railroading for like 6 years now, but want to get back into it. Currrently working on a small 30 inch x 50 inch table for an N gauge layout with a 2 inch foam base. I had hoped to use Atlas remote turnouts which mount on top, but found out they have not been produced for over 2 years now. So I am at a loss now as to what remote people might recommend for this foam base, how to mount, etc etc. Hoping to do DCC but only used DC before. Thanks for any input you can provide.
