Dummy or cheap Power?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 12:21 AM
I'm at a small delimma here. I'm considering ordering a FT-B unit that will need to be modified for my needs. For $6 more I can get a powered one, of course it can't be of that high of quality. Should I spend the $6 extra and run it until it dies, then rip out the internals to create a dummy, or just go for the dummy and assume a powered one puts more strain on my good A unit?

If you need a dummy, get the dummy. Most powered engines have enough mettle to pull another unit and not die trying. Six bucks can be put towards those specialty parts to make that B unit something special.

You didn't say what you were going to do with the B unit, but I'd suggest getting the powered one for the few bucks more. Powered units come with metal wheels that can be used for power pickup if needed, and the motor can be removed and kept as a cheap spare. If you go this route, you'll have to remove the gears from the trucks so they will roll - more spares. Worth a try anyway.

If you are looking for some inexpensive dummies, try Lankel Hobbies at www.lankel.com
They have some Athearn dummies for under $10

I'm guessing you're talking about the Bachmann FT-B judging by the price difference? I'd go with spending the extra $s to get the powered one - their newer all-wheel-drive diesels like this are actually pretty good locos - add flywheels or remotor to include them and you have something that runs very nicely. The can motors they're now fitting seem pretty solid - I have three of their GPs which seem to be reliable, solid locos.

I'd go for the extra $6 and get the power even if it wont last long and then rip out the insides to create a dummy.

Thanks everyone. I'm going with the powered one (or 2 actually). Getting a CBQ to go with my A unit and an Erie to be repainted CNW.
