[:(][:(][:(][:(][:(] What an absolute shame. The engines they produced were great. I have a set of 4 f units, an AS16, and a Baldwin switcher. Every one of them an excellant example of what this hobby can produce.
Stewart Hobbies will be missed! [:(][:(][:(][:(]

Could it be that they were absorbed by someone else?

I had to check just to be sure. I can't believe it. They made high quality products at reasonable prices. I wonder what happened? Will someone buy them out? I sure hope so!

This is a shocker!

Hopefully someone is taking over their line. Would make sense as it's doubtful they would let those expensive dies and molds sit and collect dust.

My Stewart F7 in the NYC is still my best performing unit.

Are you sure? They are still advertized in the various magazines. If they were closing why would they continue with the expense?

How do you know for sure what your saying is the truth?

(After the above was posted, I went to the website www.stewarthobbies.com and this website IS stating that Stewart has closed).

Somebody! Send Bergie an E-mail! Perhaps he, Andy or someone on the MRR staff could confirm or deny this question! [:0][:p]

Steve?

What's troubling is the names listed on the Stewart "closed" message do not include Steve. I just saw him not too long ago. I hope he's OK.

Like he said, go to Stewart's website - http://www.stewarthobbies.com. You'll find this:

QUOTE: Stewart Hobbies, Inc. has closed its doors as of 4:00 pm Monday, October 18, 2004. No further details are available at this time. Thank you to all of our loyal customers over the years. We will miss you.

Sincerely,

Jon, Jim, Dan, Rick, Scott, Peg, Carl, Ken, Robert, and Ray.
Stewart Hobbies, Inc.

It doesn't get much plainer than that. Notice that Steve's name is conspicuously absent...

Hey, I just checked the site and there is no mention of closing. They have a message posted for the open house on Nov. 7th.

EVeryone should double check.

I just checked (morning of Oct 19th) and the site is silent about closing. It says it was last updated Oct 15. Could this be some sort of hacker at work? If so it is not funny.
I agree this calls for MR or the NMRA or MRIA to say something public about what has happened.

There is nothing on their page about closing. It is business as usual.
Was it a web site hijacking?

It's normal now (October 19, 2004 7:55AM ES)Tshowing an October 15th update.

Weird. What I posted was directly lifted from www.stewarthobbies.com.

I'm hearing mumblings now that it was an attack. Not a very imaginative one...

I sure hope they haven't closed. My Stewart F units are superb. They make excellent, fairly priced products and they're good people to deal with.

I know Steve Stewart by proxy and he had or has a son with serious heart problems. He has also built a company that should have an excellent market price at this point. I can't imagine anyone building that equity and just baling out. No doubt if he is not involved he is selling the business to someone in my estimation and perhaps plans more time wit his family. He retired as a teacher a few years ago. Maybe this goes hand in hand with that decision.

When a company is sold they sometimes officially "close" and then reopen under
the new ownership..... it happened with a company that I used to subcontract from. Dave

OK, the Stewart website now shows nothing about closing down. Looks like it WAS some sort of internet sabotage...

According to the the other Stewart thread it was bought by Bowser, but of course by now you all likely know that!

Is this the Stewart that make the locos (F-units, U25B, etc.), or the Stewart that made all the hoppers a few years back (six-paks)?

The Stewart(s) to which you are referring are the same. Stewart Hobbies made locos, hopper cars, and ore cars.

Thanks.

I know there were two Stewarts, though. One was Stewart Hobbies and the other was Stewart Models...I think.

Just trying to nail down which one is being discussed here.

Maybe you are thinking of Campbell? They had a Scotsman in a kilt as their logo.
