decal weathering?
Posted by rambo1 on Sunday, June 22, 2014 10:29 AM

A company is making decals that look like long and short rust decals in streaks. Don't know if I will like this taking away our hand brush and airbrush skills. rambo1..

Any me info on what company?

The thing about mass produced details like this is a sameness  once you use a few on the same surface. The randomness of airbrush, powders or dry brush is gone. I see this when I use some of the detailing tools in Photoshop. WIth the Clone Stamp tool, a similar detail gets repeated over an area where you want to hide something (or someone). Then I have to go over it again to break up the repeated pattern.

I'm going to assume you are referring to these folks ....

They also sell on ebay ....

I got a bunch of samples from them when they first started. The artwork is taken from actual hand weathering. The decals are printed in extremely high resolution - you cannot see any visible half-tone dots with the naked eye.

There is enough variety in their sets you could easily keep everything different. They are a great starting point (rust streaks) but might look a bit odd on their own if they aren't blended with additional weathering.

All in all, a decent product to get your feet wet.

Mark.

I'd guess that most of those who can't or won't do their own weathering also can't or won't do decaling. WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

I have never been able to get the dinks, dents and scrapes right by hand so I tried decals along with weathering powders and acrylic paint.
