Numberboards for RPP SD9s
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 10:21 PM
I recently purchased a pair of Rail Power Products SD9s, and I'm perplexed as to how to go about adding numberboards to these units. It appears that I'm going to have to drill and file holes in the shells where the numberboards should be. And once I've done that, how does one model the "frame" that appears to stand out about an inch from the carbody around the numberboard?

John just a thought because I don't have a current issue but check the Walthers Catalog under Details West and Detail Associates. See if there aren't some EMD number boards listed...Maybe this will give you a "starting place"...Vic

Vic, that was my first thought. I went through every page of the detail parts section of the 2001 catalog with no luck. I then tried my local hobby shop (Riverdale Station in Riverdale GA) and went through every parts catalog they have (DA, DW, PSC, Cannon, etc.) with no luck. I suppose I could cannabalize a couple of Athearn GP7 shells I have and graft the numberboards from them to the RPP shells.

Well Shucks John!! I would have thought that with all the detail parts they make that that would have been a "stock" item. Didn't Athearn make or still makes an SD9? What about "grafting" the noses off one of those shells onto yours? Seems like that might be a bit easier since you would have more to work with. BTW...I'm very familar with Riverdale Station. Saw Bob a couple of weeks ago. A great guy and a great store!! I'm in Columbus so I get up there every now and then. Were you at the trainshow in Marietta this weekend? I thought it was pretty good but didn't buy anything HA HA.. Very little HOn3 there. Take care...Vic

Problem is, earlier Athearn shells have fat bodies (9-12 scale inches)..not to terrible by itself, but would not match rear of RPP shell. Try contacting RPP for their reccommendation. Hard to believe they would leave them off shell..
