Great idea. Should be submitted to MR Magazine as Tip of the month. We have a bright cat over there.

Safety note - if you're using an extension cord with a soldering iron, get a big, thick, heavy one.  Don't use a thin one meant for a 1-bulb lamp.

A soldering iron is gonna pull that much? My Weller 140/100 soldering gun only pulls 1.2 amps.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Southgate

I sorta did the same thing, partly. I added a 'stension cord between my iron and the station. Since my station is no more than about 14 feet from any point in the RR room, not so much cord needed. It is nice not to have to look for a closer plug.

Room of LION is old classroom. In those days nobode ever thought that a classroom would require plugs. One in front for the teacher and one in back maybe for a projector (remeber those things!--they came *before* TV sets).

LION installed new building wires in fron where is the workbench and operating tower of him, and ignored the one in the back.

LION *thought* of opening the soldering station to see what wires wer going to the hand piece. Power and GRound, yes, of course, but what sensor the temperature? If the sensor was built into the hand piece, well and good, it is just a wire reporting back to the station. LIONS have lots of wires. But if it is a mechanical thermal link of some sort, then surely him would not want to cut it.

This solution was the easiest.

He does the same thing I do many times. He makes the most of what he has instead of wishing after what he doesn't have.

Lion,

Excellent, creative abd very practical tool! The flexibility is a big plus. Cool factor in this is that schools often toss out music stands like these and can often be picked up for pennies on the dollar.

Won't be surprising if some modelers pick up on your idea and implement it.

Thank you for sharing this.

LION bought new soldering station. Very Nice...

But...

Cord is so short, my *tail* is longer than that!

LION used to 40' cord on soldering iron, take it anywhere on layout without replugging. High or low, or at the bench it matters knot!

LION built new soldering stand for new soldering station. Now iron, station and all can go where is needed. Still has 40' long extension cord. Rais stand to work on upper levels, lower stand to sit and work at bench or under table.

See...
