Walthers' Car Float
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 14, 2004 3:56 PM
Did anyone model that big ol' Car Float that Walthers' produced in their "Railroading on the Waterfront" series? It was like 40" long. They also had that Loading Apron, and even a tug boat.

How did you work the trackage? I've never seen the thing close up.

I keep thinking about incorporating it into my layout someday, since I'm in NJ and so many railroads operated them here, to get rolling stock in and out of New York City.

Its allready been "retired'" by Walthers......I guess it did not sell very well.

Thanks
Jim

I have two of them waiting to be built. I think Model Railroading magazine had an article on how to superdetail the model.

Although retired, I think it did very very well. It and the tugboat are impossible to find in the secondary market.

Hi DKelly

If you feel like parting with one of those Carfloats, your old pal Jim up in New Jersey would be glad to buy it from ya. I got the tug boat from ebay. The apron I could rig it some way.

Thanks

Jim,

If I could I had gotten three! My two are spoken for in the layout. I was lucky with the carfloats and aprons - got them from an internet store just before they went to impossible to find. Had to get my tug boats from ebay and managed to get a somewhat decent price after nearly a year of trying.

If I were smart I would have gotten about 10 of each when they were still easily available - that investment would have done better than the S and P 100 earily and kick butt over my mutual funds lol.

I hope Walthers decides to reissue the waterfront series. It should do quite well.

DKelly

Your layout must be nice.

I was recently shown someone's layout, and he had 3 of the floats. That's what sparked my interest. He modeled a whole waterfront scene. Really nice, lots of detail. Really dirty water like there nornally is around where the tugs and stuff tie up. He used Envirotex for the water.

He even had a dead body floating in the water. Hey, it is the New Jersey waterfront after all.
