It wasn't that small, ran from Buffalo, NY to Ft Wayne, viaCanada, from Toledo to kansas City with a second route from Toledo to Chicago to Decatur and Decatur through St Louis to Moberly. Had branches to Omaha, Des Moines, Keokuk, and Effingham.

Carried a lot of auto parts.

Sorta like a more northern Nickle Plate.

The Wabash was a Class 1 midwest to east connector. The main line east went from St Louis to both Chicago & Detroit. The Toledo connection at one time was connected to the W&LE to give them connections to Pittsburgh.
Lines ewst began out of St Loius with connections to Des Moines, Omaha & Kansas City. They ran fast trains especially in the St Louis-Decatur-Fort Wayne to Detroit lines. The real "Wabash Cannonball" was a day train connecting St Louis with Detroit. N&W merged with them and NKP in the 60's.

They were big enough to have a set of pretty little streamliners with domes on the Chicago-St Louis run, and another set of UP painted cars on a Kansas City-St Louis run.

The Bluebird was the ONLY domeliner between St. Louis and Chicago. It had enough domes and was pulled by E units that, except for the blue paint, could have been any Burlington train of the era. Dome cars went to Norfolk-Cincinnati service after the merger. All went into Amtrak and almost all are now owned by private individuals. Does anyone know what happened to the dining car. Is it still working for Amtrak?
