Heljan Brewery / Walthers Monarch Brewery - HO
Posted by freeway3 on Monday, February 3, 2014 8:55 AM

I've had the Heljan HO #807 "Brewery" kit for some time, and have been looking for a companion "Bottling Plant" building.  Having no luck finding one, I bought the #322-690 "Monarch Brewery Complex" (made by Heljan, distributed by Walthers), which includes the brewery and bottling plant.

Seems the Walthers version is a lot smaller - made to "work" with both HO and N scales, with different doors supplied.  Ugg. I think these are really N scale, and too small for my use.

Here's a shot comparing the tallest section ("Malt House Tower") of the two kits.  The larger Heljan 807 is on the right, the Walthers 690 on the left:

The other buildings in the Walthers kit are similarly proportioned, so the Bottling Plant I want to use with the Heljan kit is too small.

Does anyone know if Heljan ever made a Bottling Plant to match the scale of their #807 Brewery?

Below is the smaller Walthers Bottling Plant for reference.

Amazing..... I newer knew they made a smaller version. The thing is that the big version is almost S-scale, and looking at the ruler, you have 2" per floor on the small version. That is very suitable for HO in my opinion..... How large is the bottling plant?

Actually, Ed, this Heljan structure is the old "Bonana Brewing", which it was nemed before Walthers took over it's distribution. Here's my "Mud Hen Brewery" which i modified a bit. You can't see the modifications in this photo. Sorry about the quality as I have been having trouble posting photos on this site.

I meant to tell you. This, of course, is the Heljan structure. Actually you can see the modification; it's the small attached structure on the far end, which was cut and attached to the end of the building here. Also in the photo to the right is the supply house, where box cars of brewing materials, like yeast and hops are delivered. Here is a more panoramic view of the whole complex. In this photo you can also see the grain silos, where covered hopper cars deliver loads of barley an other grains and covered hopper cars of spend brewers grains are loaded and taken out.

Amazing..... I newer knew they made a smaller version.

The kit the OP has is Walthers 322-807, which is described as being HO scale: http://www.walthers.com/exec/search?category=&scale=&manu=heljan&item=807&keywords=&words=restrict&instock=Q&showdisc=Y&split=30&Submit=Search

The original kit was Walthers 322-678, which is now described as N scale: http://www.walthers.com/exec/search?category=&scale=&manu=heljan&item=678&keywords=&words=restrict&instock=Q&showdisc=Y&split=30&Submit=Search

However, I did have one of the 678 kits, possibly an earlier release from Heljan, that I sold off.  This was described as being N/HO.  It included doors in both scales.

Walthers also made an N/HO slaughter house that was very similar to the brewery.  This is 322-681.  The kit I have also has doors for N/HO.  If anyone is interested, let me know.

Thanks for the replies.  Graff, you correctly point out that the smaller version is about 2" per floor, and that's about right for HO.  I guess I was looking at the larger kit, which I've had for a while, and just thought the smaller kit was way too small.  The Bottling Plant is the same relative height of about 2" per floor.

Tom, your "Bonana Brewery" is, in fact, the same as the bottling plant that comes in the Walthers Monarch Brewery kit - mine is shown from the opposite direction as yours - and it has the coupola on the larger section, and the pyramid roof on the smaller section.

Max, the 690 kit also has doors for HO and N, while the 807 has doors for HO and O!
