I have posted this a few times, but nobody has asked the question so clearly before.

This is the main level of a 46' x 38', 3 rail O gauge monster in my basement. Very slowly it is taking shape.

Hey SantaFeJim!

What software are you using for you track plan? It sorta looks like Atlas 'Right Tracks'.

This is mine. You can get a better view at my album pic#42. Just use the link at the bottom.

It is mostly mainline right now with some turnouts installed for sidings and spurs. The yard in the lower left is being re-designed for more realistic yard operations. I am trying to complete my steel manufacturing complex in the lower center right and move on to other areas. I have been on this most of this summer.

Jeez, don't have the software. It's a sort of HO 24'x24' double dogbone with a non-parallel double track main and a fairly large yard and a couple of sidings and a two and a half level non-helix main line and I've still got to put in the holding yard on the other side of the garage, and 34" minimum radius curves and a maximum 2.4% grade (mainly 2%) and DANG, BIG BOY, WHAT KIND OF BASEMENT DO YOU HAVE BACK THERE? I'M SALIVATING ALL OVER THE KEYBOARD!

There's already plan for expansion, a coaling wharf and docking facility for general cargo

Mine's being nuilt on a 3' x 6'-8" hollow core wood door. This is the approximate trackplan. I've used flextrack so some of the curves are a bit different. Close enough for discussion purposes. It was originally based on on layout N-17 in the Atlas book "Nine N Scale Railroads". Note that if you click on the plan it opens up and is a bit easier to see.

The above shows what I have laid. I am working on an elevated portion (not shown) that will cover the top 1/3 to 1/2 and goes through two tunnels, but is still in the planning stages. The "L" shape is 10 feet on top and 10 feet on the right side. each "L' is 6 feet wide. Hope that all made sense!

Love to.
Come on over some time, bring some trains.
I got plenty of food and drink for an extended
operation.
I run a 12.5 x 13 size room, 3 continuos loops
on DC system ( block ) and a moderate yard.

Plan view photo of a Navy on-base railroad served by Santa Fe.

Scheme for a future dream Santa Fe layout, LOWER LEVEL running from island seaport on the Texas coast past ricefields and refinery district to and through a major city and on to central and north Texas on the rest of the Santa Fe system. Stomping grounds of [i]Texas Chief[/] streamliner and [i]Ranger[/] mail-express-accomodation.

UPPER LEVEL secondary line through East Texas piney woods.

All N scale.

Sorry Tom, I missed your question before, I just caught it.

Before you drown in drool, let me say that having this much space may seem like the greatest thing in the world, but it does have a couple of drawbacks. Designing for this space was a dream. Building a layout in it is quite another story.

It takes a lot of energy and MONEY to bring that drawing to reality, both of which I am somewhat lacking of late. The energy is the bigger problem, as I have most of the trains and other materials stockpiled.

To answer your question, the entire basement is 4450 square feet, and the living space upstairs is the same. The train room is about 2000 square feet, but the layout is more like 1750 including walkways, though the benchwork is double decked.

On Thursday night, I want to the local NMRA division meeting, and brought the track plan. I've been in the NMRA for 30 years, but have not always been active. I couldn't believe the amount of interest the plans got when I spread them out on an empty table. Next month I will go in better prepared. I see a real possibility of getting a crew formed to make this thing happen in a timely fashion. This is a club style layout in a private home.

It is a little hard to believe that this plan is for 3 rail O. That fact threw a lot of guys for a loop on Thursday night.[swg]

Hey Big_Boy_4005!

Do you have a moat running around the outside of your house? Man, you're train room alone is basically FIVE times the size of my ENTIRE basement! Like you said, more space has it's drawbacks. So, does your screen name actually refer to the ol' 4-8-8-4 steamer...or to the total square footage of your basement?

Hoping that your "empire" plans come to fruition. What a great opportunity to get a buch of guys together and work on a common goal. Keep us posted how things progress...

Sorry guys, no moat. The house was designed with a basement in mind. It started off as a rectangle 40' x 100' and we added a small rectangle 15' x 30' to form an "L".

As far as my screen name goes, go to the recent screen name topic. In there you will find a link that I posted to an old topic, and the answer's there. No, it has noting to do with the square footage of my basement, but a real Big Boy would fit in the shell of the house, though the tender would have to be uncoupled.[swg]

My HO scale Eastern Railroad is a 4 x 16 ft. layout. It is a two track main line railroad. Has a Big city passenger station and a small town station. A Walthers Water st. station and a shop for repairs. Went I get to know how to put pic on the forum I will show. for which I would love to do.
