It should be pretty easy. Start with an SD40-2 and a set of Microscale decals for the Union Pacific United Way Locomotive, set number 87-851. The decal set will have painting instructions in it. Have fun. BTW, the decal set includes the starts, too. [:)]

For steam, my favorite has been any of the Southern Pacific GS-series 4-8-4's painted in the "Daylight" scheme. For diesel, I liked the Rio Grande "Grande Gold" and silver single-stripe that looked especially striking on their ALCO PA'S.

Nothing beats CB&Q's Redbird scheme!

But Rock Island's maroon/yellow, BN's Executive, and Western Pacific's passenger F unit scheme come close!

I like engine black, with weathered and somewhat greasy looking running gear. Silver or dark gray smoke box and stack. Mineral red cab roof, BN green cab interior, caboose red side window mullions and Microscale Northern Pacific on the tender sides.

Man I must be getting old to remember when trains were painted to evoke speed and style. Some of you guys must be too young to remember when trains weren't painted like delivery trucks...

   Have fun with your trains

Whoops! [:0] No, I'll pass on the designer touch. Just gimmee your basic grimy black. [:D]

Black.....it'll go with anything.
