It has been 50 years of modeling trains. When I was 13, me and a buddy use to walk over to the other side of town to which the Pennsylvania RR's 4 tracks main line from NYC and Washington. GG1's run the trains and love that loco.

Fortunately this is one disease that's wonderful to spread! My Dad got me started when I was 4 or 5 and the disease ran rampant until my parents were divorced around age 10, my disease went into remission until age 31 when my Dad gave me his first train set for X-mas one year, fortunately I believe it's here to stay. The disease is trying to take hold of my 8 yr old daughter though![:D]

Just think ahead ,and when you reach a certain age that you can sit and look back on what you've been able to accomplish, you'll be glad they will never find a cure for this affliction!

Trainaphilia is controllable, but the cure does have some nasty side effects, such as school, college, marriage, work and so forth. Remember everything in moderaton and you should be able to balance this out and lead a happy and somewhat normal life.

Dear Nut--like Andre says, you have "TrainoPHILIA," and once caught, it's impossible to cure. But do you really WANT to get a cure? Just go with it, it's the most pleasurable disease I can think of. I caught it at 10, and 54 years later, I'm still enjoying the symptoms. And look at it this way--maybe when you're my age, steam will have come back. For REAL!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OKIE. I can say that your condition is uncurable. I've had it since I was 2 or 3 myself. Living by the C&NW main out of Milwaukee didn't help. I'm 61 now. I even managed to build two layouts in Vietnam when I was there in 66-67. As the others have said drink in all the proto type you can, it does change.

If I were you, I would record everything you possibly can about your favorite prototype (I assume NS) because you never know when it will all be gone.

You're lucky...Take in as much prototype information as you can now...Things change quicker than you can imagine.Over the years I've lost so many oportunites
to to record\observe things RAILROAD.I had a model railroad up untill I was about 13.Then I got intrested in other things...Sports, Girls,Motorcycles ,time in the service,etc. etc.I got back into it ,when in my 30's I had children and built a layout for them.As a kid I lived near the NYC putnam div. coach yard and the RR barge operations w/ NYC tugboats.I often went with my truck driver father to pick up loads at the docks or freight houses.Then when I was in Korea,I was in charge of a Railhead where car loads of ammo were delivered and shipped.All of these were steam operations and I did'nt pay much attention to them because I assumed they would always be there

I hate to disappoint you (and others), but you don't have "trainaphobia". Trainaphobia would mean you have an irrational fear of trains, just as "bimbophobia" is an irrational fear of Britney Spears and "triskaidekaphobia' is the fear of the number 13.

I believe your phobia is not curable, however, the good news is, it is not fatal either. [:D] (That is unless you choose to stand in the tracks while a train is coming, but let's hope not.)

Dr. Jim's RX for your phobia is:

1) This afternoon go railfanning and take several good shots of trains. [:)]

2) This evening run trains on your layout for 2 hours. [8D] (Or build a kit, or something model related.)

This should help alleviate any phobia symptoms for today.
