Dual Dissimilar Speakers for Better HO Steam Sound
Posted by hminky on Friday, October 25, 2013 9:01 PM

When I introduced the idea of Dual Dissimilar Speakers back in 2006 it fell on deaf ears.

This really works, one speaker is full range say 220-20000Kz and the other has a middle range of about 550-6000Kz which gives a "woofer" sound:

I did the HO Bachmann Decapod before Bachmann offered them. I have a "what I did" at:

I have used the speaker combo in the HO MDC/Roundhouse Old timer tender:

Why do you say that.   I've been using dual or even more different types of speakers since I've been installing sound way back to 1983 with my first PFM unit.   I've even put small speakers in the front of the locomotive to try to get the whistle & bell sounds to "move" up there.

I am certain others read and did what you did.  Just because someone doesn't post pages of comments on you post doesn't mean they didn't read it.

Have you also tried packing the tender "speaker enclosure" with foam or fiber glass to prevent echos?   I would often get a speaker with some weak plastic sides that wanted to vibrate.  The acoustic foam really helped in that regard.

One of the other problems I've run into is the on-board sound processors are not even producing sounds in certain low and high ranges.

Geez, lighten up. Just thought that would be a clever pun.

I never expect anyone to respond.

Ah, didn't catch that.  It went right over my head.    Must be the late hour after a hard and nasty week at work.

Then most puns are never as clever as the intent.

EDIT: Most people in 2006 weren't even considering sound. They were just trying to wire a decoder.

I think you are right.  That is right about when the current sound craze started.    That is when I started buying sound equipped locos instead of installing it myself.

Harold:

Thanks for bringing the dual dissimilar speaker concept back to the front, as it were. Actually, I had never heard of it before but the concept makes a lot of sense.

My problem is that just about everything that I have or will install into is a challenge just to find the room for one speaker, let alone two.

However, I have a couple of E6 and E7 AB sets that are just begging to have some frame parts milled! Oh my, I can hear the ground (i.e. layout) shaking!

Seriously, thanks for the suggestion!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Look at the electronics houses, Digikey and Mouser, for speakers.

They have a better selection, plus they give specs.

Never heard of this idea. Someone else is looking for this solution right now on another thread!  Now I assume you could customize the sound with speaker choice?

I was reminded on another forum that a "audio crossover " could be setup as a "two way speaker" so that the bass could be accentuated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_crossover

Customization with speakers would be limited.
