N scale DCC decoder advice.
Posted by n2mopac on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 3:48 PM
I am taking the plunge into DCC on my new layout over the next couple of months. I figure since it is a new area to me, why not be a pioneer, so I think I am going to give MRC's new Prodigy Advance a try (I'm giving it a couple of months to see what kind of feedback comes out from it). But I do have one important question. What decoders are best suited to fit into N scale Atlas and Kato modern diesels (GP 38's, dash 9's, SD 70's, SD90MAC's, AC4400W's etc) and work well with systems like MRC's new system? Any experiences or advice? All help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you guys. I really appreciate your input.

Is it true that only two people have N scale DCC decoder into to share? Seems the "fluff" topics have taken over here. Its getting harder to get responses to real modeling questions, or so it seems to me.

Truth is, you'd probably get more answers in a forum that didn't have such a **** poor architecture. Throwing all the scales into one bucket like they do here is a big turn off for me. Its a busy forum, but with so much stuff that doesn't relate to what I'm doing in N, I find myself wasting time looking at posts that are about HO or sometimes even O scale locos and the like. Thus, I, like others who model N, don't frequent this site as much as we do others.

Which decoders will be best depends essentially on how much work you want to do for the installations. Minimal work, go with the Digitrax PnP decoders whenever possible. They cost more than the basic 2 function wired decoders, but offer more (whether you need the more is up to you), and have the simplest installation.
