Floquil Rail Brown replacement
Posted by wyldmanr8cer on Saturday, August 17, 2013 11:39 AM

Modelers, I have searched the forums and have been unable to find any post relating to a specific Floquil paint. In years past when building HO scale modules I would use Floquil Rail Brown aerosol cans to paint my track before ballasting and doing the scenery on the entire module. Does anyone know of another manufacturer that makes a like color in an aerosol can? The can's are convenient since I do not own a airbrush system. nate

I've been using Rustoleum brown camouflage paint in a spray can.  When working in small areas I spray some into a jar and thin for airbrushing, but the can works elsewhere.

Here's how it looks after ballasting.

Nate,

I show a Vallejo 70.795 #216 as a close color match for the Rail Brown. Unfortunately it's not an aerosol can. Rob's suggestion may be a good way to go moving forward. I think it comes down to possibly two options. One is to invest in an airbrush. Ones from Harbor Freight Tools are pretty low cost and are a good introduction to the system. The second option is to adjust your paint colors to a more available brand like Rustoleum.

Our club used Rustoleum brand 'Camouflage Brown' to paint the track structure.  The smell was pretty bad when using the large spray cans.  It took three 2-3 hour sessions over several weeks to get the track painted and cleaned off.  We had a crew that masked the areas as we went, a 'spray crew' and a 'clean up' crew to clean the top of the rails.

Myself, I used an airbrush with Floquil Polly Scale 'Railroad Tie Brown' acrylic paint.  If you are looking for 'Rail Brown', Badger ModelFlex has a 'Rail Brown' as well - Not sure how close a match it is to the Floquil/Polly Scale product....
