Has anyone found a technique for removing the lettering from IHC locomotives?

I've used a combination of pink and white gum erasers (and a little water) to remove road names. I left the road number on this loco:

I need it off any model buy still the paint under the decal to be there, can this be done?

Pencil erasers work well with a little elbow grease.
