MRC Controlmaster 20 cable length?
Posted by gmpullman on Friday, September 24, 2004 1:18 AM
Hello Friends
Anyone out there have a solution to my problem for the limited control wire length for the MRC Controlmaster 20 walkaround throttles? I have three cabs and went ahead and wired several "sockets" around my layout. Lo and behold, everything was acting crazy! When I would unplug the controller it would suddenly reverse or instantly go to maximum voltage until I re-plugged the control! THEN I read the instructions and it says I'm limited to a TOTAL of 40 feet of wire minus the 15 feet already in the coiled cord! I need more length than that!
Previously, I had used the Aristo/Polk wireless controllers but with more BLI locos on my layout switching to reverse for the sound effects was getting to be a pain. Any ideas? I haven't contacted MRC as yet.
Thanks, ED

how did you wire the sockets? you have to be carefull that you do not reverse the wires to these sockets or the controller will act as you have described. i had the same thing with my starr tech hogger. i had used a dual socket and had plugged in the wire from the base to one side of the socket. when i plugged in the hand controller into the other side of the socket the wires were reversed. i corrected it by using an adapter with a modular plug on one end and terminal connector on the other from the base to the first socket. the length of the wire shouldn't matter.

I double checked my wiring, everything seems OK. The controllers seem to work better if I have "momentum" switched on. I think I will disconnect the farthest sockets and see if the problem goes away, then re-connect the distant sockets one at a time to see where the problem occurs.
Thanks for your input!

If you need more than the 40' as spec'd out in the instructions, sounds like you should have purchased a better system. Yes, this doesn't help you much, but hopefully others will learn.

If it has an X in it, it sucks! And yes, I just had my modeler's license renewed last week!
