I have to agree with Matthew. If you can find one they are great (once you install the drive retrofit). They have been discontinued for awhile but can be found. But you must be modeling an era where it exhists for your road. Mine is SP 1004. The proto was retired in 81..over 40 years on active roster!BUT..if you had a GP40 you may really want a road switcher Type loco. If cost is a big factor then an Athearn Geep may be best..

James,All you need to do to remove the SW1500 shell is press in on the sides and rock the shell back and forth. This is the only way I found to do it.

Thanks for the reply, Jamie. But where can I get an Atlas rs-3 for abt. $50? They're more expensive where I've looked. Thanks again

How much do you want to spend? If you go with an Aterah be sure to add an Ernst transmission (drop in) for much better speed control. Total $30-40. The Proto 2000 SW9's are very good engines and are a step up detail, price and performance wise. The Kato and Stewart switchers are pricey but appear worth the money and will be under $100.00

I hate when that happens !!!!!! I have an Athern SW 1500 and an Atlas RS-3, and I like them both. The two don't really compare for the Atlas Is smoother, quieter, better detailed, and more $$$ than the Athern. On the other hand, Athern is easier to work on for I still can't figure out how to get the darn shell off. Proto a;so makes a couple SW's to choose from. The RS-3 is longer than an SW, so this would be a possible factor depending on your layout size. Don/t know if I helped at all, but the amount you want to spend is up to you. Athern you could get for about $25 - $30. Atlas or Kato $45 - $50. Just looking at both sides..............Jamie

Recently my old Atlas GP40 lost a battle with a concrete floor, and I must now replace it, using limited resources. What's the best deal, preferably in a model of transition or early diesel era?
Thanks
Jim
