When you move away from the NEC and start to lose sleep because the you can no longer hear the throaty lullaby of GE's at bedtime.

CSX_road_slug

When you step into a wide-open 100'x40' basement at a neighbor's house, and can't stop imagining what a helluva layout would fit in there.

I done this many times but I usually imagine it aloud to who ever I am with and they look at me with a puzzled look on their face.

You buy your wife the newest locomotive as an anniversary or birthday present.

You take your family to the national train show for their annual vacation.

You have your local train store on speed dial.

Your drug dealer calls you to see if you're still alive.

There is a reason my favorite color is N&W Tuscan Red.

Instead of stuffed animals, we have stuffed locomotives (I will admit, I made a stuffed J, A and Y6b!)

I can agree with that, especially if that 4-8-4 under steam happens to be 611, which we hope to get running soon.

You know you are hooked when your wife comes home and sports a pair of GP35 Earrings.......and YOU Want to wear then!

You know you are hooked when you buy a steam loco charm for your wife's charm bracelet....and she has it turned into a men's necklace for you!!!

You know you are hooked when you wake up after a *party* with a 2-8-2 Mikado tattooed to your posterior  nether behinder region!

You know you are hooked when you buy the mobile home trailer down the road and have it moved to your backyard to house your train layout .

You know you are hooked when you ask the electrician rewiring your house "how many locos will that line's amperage run?"....and have him upgrade it "just in case I expand the layout"...

You know you are hooked when you have  an addition added to your house..specifically for your layout...

That must have been a sight to see.

Back in the early 2000s, I painted a friend's Chevy S-10 in a "modified" version of the New York Central's lightning striped scheme, lol!  The "mod" was that instead of gray, I went with a copper brown and the "lightning" pattern was silver.  I should have saved the 35mm photo, but it actually looked nice and my friend received favorable compliments on his truck.  Of course, only a railfan/modeler could look at it and instantly recognize the pattern.

You definitely know you're hooked when you ask a body shop to repaint your car to a railroad's color scheme!

I know of once intance that this happened.  I saw a photo of a guy and his jeep which he  painted in the colors of the Rio Grande Zephyr F9A.  He was interviewed by the papers at the last run of the RGZ back in 1983.  The jeep was grande gold top half and silver bottom half with the Rio Grande logo on the side.  I wouldn't be suprised if others did similar things.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

You know your hooked when...

Your neighbor's barking dog is keeping you awake, but when a freight goes by just across the street, it drowns out the barking and you drift peacefully off to the Land of Nod.

You have to explain to the clerk at the stereo shop, back in the days of vinyl records, that you need a turntable that tracks kind of heavy because your living room experieces about 2.3 on the Richter scale whenever a train goes by.  And when he says, "Seriously?" you have to answer "Yes."

You know that Utah Phillips is a much better performer than Beyonce.

Mr. Dispatcher
IF they don't have trains in Heaven; Then why do they call it HEAVEN ?????

Because the devil got the basement for his layout.  Don't feel bad.  He's still got to work around the water heater and his wife's laundry room.

When you correspond with people on this forum about anything that has to do with model trains, that you don't know, or even know what they look like. You feel like you talking to your best friend;  But I like it that way.  So I must be hooked.

Been there done that!

As for some of the other examples in this topic, a lot of the members sound unhinged rather than hooked!

But as my wife, who is from the UK likes to say when she observes all the crazy Americans - she says "only in America".  Man, now that I see things through her eye's, I can see what she means!

You know you are hooked when you get Used RR ties, not for landscaping like most use them, but to add to your collection of "Rail Road Stuff"...

You know you are hooked when you pace your car to the local special running on the roadside tracks....

You know you are hooked when you keep a box of MRRIng, and TRAINS magazines in the vehicle to read at the Drs. offices. {I'm GUILTY as charged}...

You know you are hooked when you sit trackside {like a hunter after prey} to scout out and photograph trains...

You know you are hooked when you sit at a crossing as a train goes by and while others are distressed at the delay, you re busy noting the loco{s} # and type, and how many of each RR car follows the loco{s} and NEVER WANT IT TO END....

You know you're hooked when walking a long-abandoned railbed and you swear you can still hear the locomotives on down the line somewhere.
