"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"
Originally posted by rexhea To add to Don's fine work, I would like to give an update on this problem. I received information from the Walthers man who designed the Budd car. He recommends that you remove the trucks from the bottom of the car and push (form) the car contacts in toward the car. Apparently the difference in the bow of the contacts give the variation in height per coupler by holding the trucks farther down. . REX [/quote These car lighting contacts are a neat idea, in my case, no light flickering but they certainly have caused a lot of confusion. There's a ton on these still on the shelf and new buyers weekly. This will be a perpetual problem until the Walthers corrects the flaw and includes an addendum with each car. I would think that Phil Walthers should be made aware of this problem. My discounted nickel's worth. [:)] I'm currently working on some freight cars but plan on jumping on the Walthers and Rivorossi cars very soon. Cheers and High Greens! I personally would rather make up the difference with the different types of couplers since I am converting to Kaddee anyway. So, as Don suggests, take it one car at a time. They are all different. Posted by Don Gibson on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 3:57 PM What KD's to use for Walthers' Budd cars? - Previously it was "with Athearn and P2K Engines". It seems that some Budd cars' couplers sit higher than Athearn Engine's. Are the Budd's too high? or are the Athearn's too low? Answer: Could be BOTH. WHAT TO DO?: Raise the Athearn with a #27 / #47 - or lower the Budd with a #42/ #49? I find all Athearn and Genesis engines to be LOW. On the other hand I have only found one in four Budd cars high - but I have tested only 4 cars! My advice would be take it car by car - and use a KayDee coupler height gauge. If that's too much work, go with 'higher', because 'lower' can snag on turnouts. Close examination shows the Budd car's design has their OEM and KD#46's at NMRA height, and that's what KD recommends. However some cars are coming from the factory slightly out of spec. If you want 'close coupling' you can use #5's,but #46's have extra length.to allow more swing for 22" curves.. Before you complain to Walthers, some $350 hand-made brass cars have this same problem. Side note: Walthers' cars cannot take washers to raise, and If they did, they would lose electrical contact on the body. If the cars you have are not satisfactory, and you want perfect NMRA height, a 30 series - removing the car end's lower piece - might do it.
