if the ties are wood, micro mark makes little saw blades for an x-acto no. 11 knife. Or, you could use a razor saw.

So, now, is the better way to do this to lay down the turnout length ties, build the switch, then trim the ties down to length? This is the way I was going to do it, but if anyone has better suggestions, please let me know. ALso, what is good to use for trimming ties? Thanks a lot for your help!

I like to follow prototype tie layouts for my own trackwork. If you don't have this information for your favorite prototype, you can follow the diagram for a no. 6 turnout on page 23 in "Trackwork and Lineside Detail." That's based on the diagram for a full-size turnout and applies to any modeling scale.

Good luck,

HELP!! Handlaying N scale turnouts
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 11, 2002 7:23 PM
OK, Im handlaying my N scale layout with code 55 rail. I have read trackwork and lineside detail on how to lay track and lay turnouts. But, what the book doesnt say is how to figure out how many turnout length ties there are supposed to be after the headblocks. I have no clue how to figure this out. That is my dilemma. Hopefully someone out there has guidance on this, because this is really the only roadblock to me building the turnouts. Thanks for your help in advance!!
