I just tore down my Bachmann GP35 Loco with DCC on board decoder. The idea was to change out the decoder because I think it's fried to a Digitrax DZ123 decoder. and put in my own led's

The idea was to get rid of the Bachmann decoder board totally. Does this sound like a reasonable approach to you? All this talk about leaving the board in for the lights is ah.... confusing me. Mind you it doesn't take much to do that some daysHuh?

If you want to put in a different decoder and install your own LED's and resistors just go ahead. There's nothing to it. Connect the right rail pickups to the red wire, left rail pickups to the black wire. Gray wire connects to wire from the bottom of the motor and orange wire connects to wire from the top of the motor. Blue wire is your common + for the lights. White wire - for front light, yellow wire - for rear light. Like I said, nothing to it. After you've done a couple you'll be able to do it in your sleep.

LED's are working on the board leave them hooked up there. The main job of the resistors on the board is to cut the amount of power going to the motor so it doesn't start turning until the lights come on in DC mode. Hooking the motor direct to the decoder isn't going to hurt the motor. Take my word on this. I do it all the time.

Columbian coffee in an UNDECORATED mug, please.

Looks like the T1 4-4-4-4 has shipped. YIKES, really need to get busy working on the new benchwork. Farm stuff keeps absorbing what little energy I have, inspite of having 2 hired hands at the moment. Got a fair amount done on the farm today. Now I have a stack of wood to split (oak, poplar, hickory, etc...) all of which is ready to burn. With rain coming, will go work on that for a bit, but have little left in the tank (my tank, not the splitter).

Hope everyone is having a good day.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

GARRY: I think there is a Hobby Lobby in the Quad Cities, THAT's about as far as driving to Cedar cRapids. It was a, "Michael's," I think, THAT I was dragged into kicking and screaming. It may as well have been a "Michelle's" instead!! Needed a testosterone infusion after being in there! Thankfully there was a Harbor Freight nearby where I was able to be in the presence of manly tools, "Man Land," if you will,  for a period of recovery!

So Jeffery, that all I need to do? Boy that sounds way to simple. Wire the LED's the PC board or to the decoder? What about the resistors on the board, they get pretty hot.

If the LED's are working on the board leave them hooked up there. The main job of the resistors on the board is to cut the amount of power going to the motor so it doesn't start turning until the lights come on in DC mode. Hooking the motor direct to the decoder isn't going to hurt the motor. Take my word on this. I do it all the time. If anything the loco will be faster and will have more power. So leave the lights connected as they are. Disconnect the motor wires from the board and connect them to the orange and gray wires of the decoder. It'll work. If you can't do it send it to me and I'll do it.

Howdy ....

Flip .... You said it was not serious, but I hope Mrs. Flip is okay. Prayers for her. .... Ocala was where Shelley's sister lived until a few years ago. We moved her here to help with many problems she had. Sadly, she passed away about a year later.

Todd ..... A garden omelete? ..... I hope the cook pulled the weeds first. Whistling ..... Was it Barry-sized?

Ken in Maryland ..... Glad you stopped in the Diner. Please feel free to stop in again and talk with us about your layout.

Cuda Ken .... Beofre doing too much with the SD9, I would make sure the lights don't need resistors. I'm not sure. I have 6 of the SD7's and SD9's and they still have the circuit boards with no problems.

JP ... Good to see you and keep us informed about the layout you will build.

Chris .... That's a funny name, craft crapo store ...... Actually, I have found good stuff for layout construction in some of those stores. Hobby Lobby had HO trains until about a year ago. They were a good source for Woodland Scenics materials too. If that stuff was on the clearance table, the prices were great.

Ray .... Sorry to hear about your friend's daughter.

Barry .... Feel free to tell more about the transfer caboose thingee.

Ulrich ..... Where are you?

Cheers, everybody

Good morning!

OK, THAT's two recommendations for Krylon. Thanks guys! Big SmileNext time I'm in Wally-World, I'll grab a can, or might send the Wife into the crafty crap store some evening after she gets off w**k. She's already in Cedar cRapids, I'm not, so makes more sense for her to make a slight detour than for me to make a long haul for a can or two.  Plus, I got dragged into one of those crafty crap stores a few months ago...terrible thing. My man card started to incinerate itself, certain "parts" felt as though they were shrinking. Couldn't get back out the door quick enough, and THAT was even after hanging out in the aisle with drafting tools as long as possible! Seeing grown men fawining over po-pour-ee stuff Hmm...with others drooling over wicker, Lord, get me the heck outta there!

I knew there was a flat spray from Krylon THAT guys like JEFFREY have had good luck with, shoulda figured they'd make a gloss too. Huh?  I'm doing some experimenting with THAT bottle of floor polish. It looks like maybe if I was to slap on several coats, several very heavy coats, it might do the job. It's a little too thick for THAT! I'm also testing out a theory on making paper paintable without having it curl up like a cinnamon stick. Eventually, I may get around to using the polish for its designated purpose: polishing up the nasty, crappy vinyl floor in the kitchen.

Oh what a surprise THAT would be for the Wife: first, seeing the crappy floor SHINE, and second, slipping and sliding around like a 5'-4" tornado when her socks hit the gloss!Mischief

JP: Man, your situation sounds familiar. Add two more kids, make it EMS/paramedic school instead of firefighting (although she was a Chief's daughter and I was a Captain when the disaster started)... Seems to me, it either "is," or it "isn't." Sounds like it isn't. THAT said, I hope things w**k out for the best for all involved.

In other news, views and opinionated opinions, I'm with TODD, the choo choo set will stay DC based on the chronic P.I.T.A guys are having with THAT DCC stuff. I'm also looking at only one train moving at any given time, any other trains would be stuck waiting for a shot on the single track anyway, and a simple little switch THAT can turn the power to the track off will do the job just fine, thank you very much! No programming, nothing "fried," no re-setting, no speed matching, just a little "click," and the train goes or doesn't.

Simple is GOOD!

Have a good, simple, SAFE day!

Chris (in Iowa, where yet another blizzard is heading our way. Spring? HA!)

I just tried the SD 9 with it DC plug installed, it runs. So it is the PC Board.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, a big bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar and lots of dark roast coffee along side in my R&GV RR mug might warm me up on this sn*wy gray, dark morning here in the Finger Lakes.

Currently 28°F with lots of little white thingies blowing around outside.  Looked outside when I got up this morning, and everything had turned white.  Wouldn't be bad except i have to drive to Canandaigua in it this afternoon.

I went to the Museum meeting last night in Rochester.  Had an excellent slide program on the Hojack Bridge that was removed last fall.  The first part was a series of photos made in the 1970's by a good friend of mine.  He had fantastic close ups of gears and other workings of the swing bridge.  The second part of the program was by the gentleman who documented on an almost daily basis the demolition and removal of the structure.

Got home well after 10PM and found a message on my phone machine from an old teacher friend of mine *Worked with her at the Middle School) to please call her.  She started by telling me her husband and she were OK but there was some bad news she had to tell me.  I called back this morning and sit here now waiting for her to call me back (phone tag).  I did find out who died though as it will be in tonight's local paper.  It was the daughter of another person who taught in the Fine and Practical Arts dept. at the Middle School (my dept.).  Have no idea what happened, and there are no clues in the Obituary.  She was 55.

I need to haul in some firewood and get the wood stove going...

Later!

 Morning

 Flo, Diet Dew Pleases.

Back to work, man 2 days off go fast!

Karl, has a whole I don't care for Plug and Play boards. My normal problem is bad connections for the lights. If they where to solder the wires and not use the plastic caps I be fine with them.

Todd, as far as sticking with DC, at this point I wonder my self if it was worth it. With that being said, I love it when it works right, problem is when it does not! Bang Head

Vince's I just tried the SD 9 with it DC plug installed, it runs. So it is the PC Board. By the way the GP 20 is still working! Big Smile You might be off the hook on that one!

In a word - No.

Jeff- Nice lighting effect on the rails.

Thanks. That's no added effect. I set the camera on 'Night', turned off the room lights, snapped the shot. That's how it came out, no editing whatsoever.

Morning All,

Still in the midst of a cold trying to get rid of it. Need to vacuum today and crawl under the layout to try to find the sneak wire that prevents me from isolating the area I want to. I tried the F8 method but when I cycle layout power I have to go back and do F8 individually again. I also want to paint the milk station and milk jugs.

kbkchooch- I laughed at that picture.

Jeff- Nice lighting effect on the rails.

Ulrich- Where are you buddy? I am worried about you.

Hope everybody has a good day and prayers for those in need.

Goooood Friday Morning Coffeeshoppers!!!!!!!!! Big Smile  Angel to those that need them.

Flo - Coffee and a frittata w/ swiss cheese and wheat toast, along wiht a side of bacon. We all know everything is better with bacon! I'll be over in the corner booth writing down my Lowe's shopping list so I can get started on my layout. Thanks!

Todd - Yes, still with the girlfriend and yes she and her kid are still living with me. However, not so sure for how much longer though. They're both starting to get on my nerves and upset me. Long list of reasons but to make it short, the g/f and I really don't have anything in common other than firefighting and Boston Red Sox baseball. So, I don't see this lasting through the summer.

Anyways, off to get my Lowe's list going. Hope everone has a good day!

Take care!

Mornin Gang!! Cowboy

Flo dear, can I get 2 eggs over easy, toast and bacon and a big mug o coffee!

Weather report confusing today. It's written that it is 28 degrees right now, going for a high of 39, but the graph shows a high of 44! They can't get their stories straight!!! Surprise

Of course, a major event happened, as the chief weather prognosticator (I didn't know they traveled in tribes) made a major admission this week.Wink

So much for that!Tongue Tied

Yes, Ziva is hot, Abbey is hot too, in her own funky way. Still those of us who grew up with Wonder Woman will ever get past Lynda Carter. Hottest ever on the TV screen.Stick out tongue

Chris. Get to a craft store, pick up some Krylon Workable Fixatif (Yeah, that's how it's spelled). Goes on really smooth and glossy. I use it on top of Floquil finishes for a nice gloss to decal over, then Dullcoat from there. Works great!!Big Smile

Todd. Yes it is sad, it's hard to see , especially for her kids, but it go weird for me last night. They are postponing  the viewings til Wednesday and services until Thursday on next week! 10 days on ice? I didn't think that was normal. I can only guess at this point they are doing it so that the one son who was in the car with her should be out of the hospital by then and can attend the funeral.

Ken. Your SD9 is the very reason why I hate" Plug & Play" setups. The manufacturers boards are cheap, flimsy or a waste of space. I say chuck em all! Yeah they save time, but if you have to rip it apart later, what have you saved??

I'm off to decal engines today, maybe I'll have the triplets done by the weekend!Sigh

Ulrich?? Anybody?

Cya!

Karl

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and oh…..a garden omelet please, thanks.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 45. Now that’s more like it…IndifferentOh you’ve got to be kidding me!!! Really?!! They’re calling for 4 to 8 inches of sn*w from Saturday night to Sunday night. Big Easter Egg Hunt is Saturday the 30th. Temps may not be warm enough to melt that much sn*w and if so, may be a muddy sloppy mess.Grumpy Groundhogs.....hate 'em.Grumpy

Karl- Sad about your friends wife

Chris- Have you tried just like, Krylon clear gloss?

Flip- Glad there’s nothing serious, but prayers for the wife anyway. Never hurts.

(spits coffee…cough cough hack cough) IndifferentAbby? Hotter than Ziva? Not according to me OR a TV Guide poll. Actually Ziva, or Cote De Pablo rather, was voted #1 Hottest Women on TelevisionStick out tongue. I REST my case. Now, let’s not confuse the facts by bringing in other polls as it took me a few to find the one with results I greed with.Whistling

JP- Good for you!!! I wish I’d started a bit smaller for the learning curve myself. Looking forward to the pictures. You know we’re a nosey bunch and just loooove pictures. By the way, how’s the…..girlfriend (?) and the living arrangements going? Still thinking of keeping her?

(if he looks at me funny it’s because I got confused with someone else. It’s been awhile you know)

After listening to Ken all this time, I’m beginning to think away that DCC switch and stick with DC. Probably never run moren one thing at a time anyway. His luck is like mine.Sigh

Welp, today in celebration of the SECOND day of spring and being one day away from potentially the LARGEST SN*Wfall of the year…… I hope to utilize the light in the trainroom I turned on yesterday only to receive a phone call just as I didConfused. You know the rest. I left the light on just like Motel 6. They're CFL. Takes more energy to turn them back on than just to leave them on. Juries out on just how long they have to be on before it evens outHmm. Aaaanyway, gotta w**k tonight so I won’t be getting too involved in things today.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning. It's 59° with 100% humidity. The high will be 75° and we might get wet today.

Hopefully I'll be able to work on the layout today with no interruptions. I have no additional plans except to stay dry.

Weather guesser says it'll be 55 tonight with a 20% chance of rain. Bit warmer than last night. I got a little more work done on the layout. Not as much as I would have liked. Today it was my own physical limitations that got in the way. My knee is still hurting and I couldn't keep my weight on it for long. After it was hurting bad enough that I just said the heck with it and stayed off my feet the rest of the day.

Well, time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening all -

I'm about to start work on building my 1st layout. I found a interesting (to me at least) 2' x 6' layout in the 2013 issue of MRP. It is mostly switching but also only has 3 businesses on it. It also has a street along the back side with a row of 5 businesses that are street side and also has a creek running through it.

Anyways, I figure I'll start building tomorrow and see how it goes from there. Pictures will be posted for all to see as I progress in my 1st layout venture. Even if it doesn't come out good or even useful, I can always calk up the learning as gaining experience in building a layout.

Well, hope all is well. Have a good evening.

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
