Maybe it's time to discount the stuff that IS in stock........
MB Kleins does exactly that, and quite a bit of the stuff disappears quickly. By way of example they discounted the once expensive Walthers 89' RTR TOFC flat cars down to $11.xx and that got rid of the TT and TTX versions in a few weeks, then they discounted what was left to $9.xx and the rest blew out the door very fast. We're talking about HO flat cars which were in the $36 to $42 MRSP range! You just gotta keep an eye on your vendors! Some will hang on to stuff for months or years because they don't disount it but others will discount and eventually heavily. But if you are in a hurry, pay alot more.

nickybI am sorry but I have to disagree. If they manuf in THE UNITED STATES that wouldn't of happened.
You disagree with what? That Atlas will be shipping in the next few weeks/months? That it's a one-time thing? Atlas is apparently already shipping HO Code 83 and Code 100.
MicroEngineering track is made right here in the USA and often goes out of stock.

That's a pretty narrow request -- so to say "Nothing in stock anywhere" (as in the title of your thread) might be a little overstated. Best of luck with your search.

I only knew about atlas track both code 100 & 83 being out because of bad planning. What have you been looking for.
ed_nAfter years of procrastination I am ready to start a new layout (N scale), and I can't get anything. I was on M.B. Kleins website
I'm not sure how you are searching, but their website currently shows that they have hundreds of N scale locos in stock, and perhaps thousands of freight cars. If you are looking for something very specific, that can be a timing issue: because of the much wider variety of products offered than even 10-15 years ago, not everything is in stock all the time.
The atlas track situation is apparently a one-time problem caused by a forced change of contract manufacturers. They have announced that they will be shipping N scale track over the next few weeks/months. PECO also works fine if you're in a hurry.
It is frustrating to see "out of stock" on so many items, but I don't think it is all the dealers fault. There has been a lot of talk about the changes in the Chinese economy raising havoc with the manufacturing end. As mentioned our economy makes keeping a large inventory difficult. Guess we just have to hunker down and hope for the best.
As for the P&W equipment, have you thought of getting someone to decorate some for you? There are some folks that do very nice work. One here in VT moved a few years ago, did very nice work on our local roads. There is a fellow from NH that comes to some of the shows I go to, he has many nicely painted custom painted peices at a fairly reasonable price.
Good luck,
Mine doesn't move.......it's at the station!!!
ed_n Yeah. After years of procrastination I am ready to start a new layout (N scale), and I can't get anything. I was on M.B. Kleins website, and item after item is... out of stock... out of stock... out of stock... Not just track, but freight cars, locomotives, etc.

out of stock...
Not just track, but freight cars, locomotives, etc.
Funny thing is I when I search my favorite road names like D&RGW or Southern Pacific, out of stock is the case in HO but there are lots of things instock in N scale. Whats up with that?
Not just track, but freight cars, locomotives, etc. About the only thing in stock is structures. I need N scale turnouts, only ones available anywhere are Peco.
I searched Walthers, only for items in stock, and the selection is slimmer than I ever remember.
At least the LHS has plenty of Midwest cork roadbed. I also bought out their remaining supply of Peco flex track.
Depends on what your looking for and where. I was trying to buy track at my LHS's and could not find anything in stock. but when I went online got everything I needed at 2 websites ! Try www.cherrycreekhobbies.com or www.trainland.com they have a lot of stock at a competitive price
It costs too much money to have stock in a warehouse. You get a better return (albeit not very much these days) to leave it in a bank, and then make what you need when you need it. Manufactures cannot do it anymore, and neither can your Local Hobby Shop.
LIONS are impatient and either make their own things or will gnaw at the bones of whatever hapless critter happens to be in the LHS. No wait... we do not have a Local Hobby Shop.

A. Inventory was always, historically, low after Christmas. Some manufacturers (Lionel and others in O scale, but they are not the only ones) time their new product releases to hit during the last quarter of the year--just before Christmas. When they are gone, they are gone, and it takes the dealer network much of the year to recover the inventory they blow out during the last quarter of the year. Even the fine (ie largest, most established, train only) train stores are a little thin right now on inventory.
B. That said, perhaps you just aren't shopping at the right dealers. MB Klein (www.modeltrainstuff.com) has all kinds of new HO product in stock, several items deep in every road number right now.
New release Athearn Genesis diesels and SP's last classes of cabooses, with lights or without--they have them--plenty of each. Bowser's latest six axle Centuries that just arrived, BLI's latest RSD-15's and SD40-2's, along with other models I don't even track (like steam)--they are there.
C. I don't know what you are looking for specifically. Perhaps if you share it someone will help you find it.

Can you be more specitic?
Hi,
