The problem is the AC's will run on DC, but because of the weight, very slowly if at all.

Take a look at the MRC website under the Train Controls AC Power and DC Power sections. I do not know of any power pack that would run both DC and AC locomotives

I would appreciate suggestions for DC powerpacks capable of driving  American flyer DC and AC  cast engines  with some indication of their quality and effectiveness.
