Man Run Over by Train, Wakes Up

LE MARS, Iowa (AP) — A man who police say was intoxicated was unhurt after a train drove over him.

Shawn M. Polley, 44, of Bowling Green, Ky., was passed out between the rails of the train tracks last week, police said.

The train's engineer hit the emergency break and notified authorities that the northbound train may have hit a pedestrian. Two of the train's engines passed over Polley's body without hitting him, Officer Jay King said.

Authorities woke Polley and removed him from the tracks after the first engine was disconnected.

"He was sleeping, passed out, whatever you want to call it," King said. "He's just a lucky guy."

Polley was arrested for public intoxication and interference with official acts.

He is indeed very lucky to be alive, since diesel locomotive traction motors usually hang down so low between the rails that they crush anyone sleeping there. There have been several reported deaths of illegal border crossers being crushed by trains because they are advised by someone to sleep between the rails to avoid rattlesnakes, and traction motors just barely clear the railtop when going through a turnout or track crossing.

He must have been totally out and totally flat between the rails, to be missed by the pilot. Could you imagine if he woke up in that position, while the train was still moving? Whack, splat, the end. [xx(][:O] Maybe this will be enough to scare this idiot straight.

By the way Plane, the guys over on the Trains Magazine forum love these stories, if it hasn't been posted over there already.

That's amazing!!! That's one lucky man. He should play the lottery right now, before his luck runs out. I guess he already won!!!!

I am not sure what the lesson here really is. On the one hand, don't drink and hang around railroad tracks. On the other hand, if you do, get really rip roaring drunk so you are so passed out you don't even react to a train running right over you.
I bet that train crew was shook up badly by the whole thing -- while this particular goof managed to live through it, it is the guys in the cab who get the blood pressure problems due to incidents like this.

We had a similar incident near Hamilton (in S. Ontario) several years ago on a CP line. Young guy passed out on the track, between the rails, on his way home from the pub. He awoke as the train passed over him, raised his head and a hose coupling cranked him in the forehead. The crew had seen him and applied the brakes but he was about 8 cars back by the time they stopped. The had to split the train to remove him. Crew must still be having nightmares. The guy went home from hospital the next day with a minor concussion and a few stitches. I guess God really does look after fools!
