There's always someone around here.
Do you have a theme for your layout? Mining? Passenger? Industrial? Prototype or freelance?
Streamlined steam, oh, what a dream!!
JLKI guess I will start this and see if anyone is around. I am working at tearing down my old layout. I am planning to build one in my bedroom. I also intend to build a new workbench and convert to DCC.
SP&S modeler, 1960's give or take a decade or two for some equipment.

I think it is going to be a freelanced industrial layout.
I'm still here too! Been a little slow since school started up...

Mind if I pop in? I'm extending my model railroad a little to include a high line through town so I can finally have continuous running.

Since I am home schooled I have plenty of timeto work on my layout, but I do do other things. I am nearly done dismantling my old layout then I can start my new one.
once I finish this layout I'll start a new one for my grandfather it'll be a logging layout.
Here are some photos of my railroad. I finished the highline a few days ago.
As you can tell, it's a work in progress since it's messy.
Is it too late for my 2 cents?
Since my layout is a freelanced logging railroad, I can probably help out a little.
Here's a few pictures of my layout.
Those of you who are home schooled or who are schooled online, I say lucky! I have school from 8:00 to about 2:45, and I'm not home from about 6:40 to about 4:00 (maybe to about 7:00 if I have work).
The Lehigh Valley Railroad, the Route of the Black Diamond Express, John Wilkes and Maple Leaf.
-Jake, modeling the Barclay, Towanda & Susquehanna.
JLKWell, we should get plenty done will stuck inside by Hurricane Sandy. Well, us in the east anyway. I'm have fun remotoring my Mantua General.
I plan on servicing my newly acquired 2020 Lionel steam turbine (makes awful grinding noise, E-unit doesn't always click) , and doing some more scenery work on my layout. HOWEVER, the conditions created by Sandy may make it difficult to do since I am in an area that faces a huge risk of the power going out.
I tore down my previous layout in the spring, and worked on the new one all summer. I model BNSF in Southern California from 2011-december of 2012. I visited where i'll be modeling this summer so I have a great idea of what the area is like. My summer goal was to finish my helix, and lay, wire, and paint all of the track on the bottom level. The school year schedule for modeling is a lot different, but I try to find an hour a night to work on it between my two jobs, one being at a model train store. I'm definitely lucky to be one of the few employees there and never come home without something. To tell you the truth, i think i've came home once with all of my check! If any of you haven't seen my YouTube videos, please check them out at http://www.youtube.com/user/schul4.
good luck out there you guys, as for layouts the next one I build will be a 4' X 8' now that the office is getting cleaned up.
Thanks, and as far as power, we haven't lost it either. In fact, I saw that a tree got blown down in the middle of the night when I woke up this morning.
As far as the layout and 2020 goes, I haven't worked on the layout yet. I did get the 2020 serviced, and it runs better, but the E-unit still isn't clicking all the time. I may take it to English's in Williamsport to get it looked at in more detail.
Just added some spilled coal in front of my coal tipple. Really changed how the layout looks.
Just had to replace a wire in my 2020. It's all original wiring, so I'm not surprised that it needed some new wiring.
Performed some servicing on my E-unit (yes, I did all of a sudden get the guts to rip it apart) and now it works properly. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I just need a 6020W or 2020W tender.

Key to success for Lionel was simplicity. The E-unit may sound like a complex item, but it's nothing more than a drum, metal fingers, a plunger, and an electromagnet.
If you could mention who produced the GS4, I maybe able to find the parts diagram for it, making reassembly easier (I'm assuming Kato made this item).

I did see that kato has a parts catalog avalible for $5, which includes parts diagrams. If you are willing to spend an extra $5, you can very well have that GS-4 back together.

if it means getting a GS4 back up and running that five bucks will pay itself off. thank you.

Actually, hold off on that. I just looked at it again and it said "for models produced before 2002". If your GS -4 is from before that, okay. But if not, well, I don't know what to do. There was a forum of someone trying to install a decoder in such an engine, so you may want to take a look at that.
