LIghtbender: Thanks for the photo of your MDC Climax. How could anyone resist it? It's like a cat-show, everyone's there to show off all of their purebred Siamese, Abys or Maine Coons, but the cage that gets the most 'oohs' and 'aahs' is the one containing the battle-scarred Red Tabby alley cat with one ear. Like I said, so butt-ugly that it's CUTE! And you're right, a buddy of mine has one and it wobbles and whines through bad track like a champ.

Does the BLI model have this problem, or does it need huge curves?

My BLI AC-5's cab doesn't overhang that much, even on 24" radius curves. Not far enough to wipe anything out.

My vote would really have to go to the Rivarrossi/Mehano F-M C line cab unit, however. I bought a couple for about $5 (new) which is about what they are worth, because they are almost historic, one of the first mass production HO diesel units, dating from the mid 1950s.

(I'm not really down on Rivarrossi - I like a lot of their models!)

Thats right Mark, thats how I can think a late Cab-forward is the most gorgeous articulated ever, but someone else may think its a stupid lookin' contraption.

Yup, they are loud, whiny groaning and waddling, they take forever to get anywhere but can climb impossible grades and need really nasty trackwork to derail. They certainly aren't pretty.

Probably the Tri-ang Transcontinental F unit - to be fair, they never did say exactly what this loco was supposed to be, though it's a fair bet it was supposed to be an F. Unfortunately, it looked nothing like one!

I agree with the comments about the MP F2s - I was very tempted to buy one of these as a project loco until I saw the shape!

Any loco in a paint scheme it shouldn't have - Bachmann high-nose GP50s in UP paint, Life-Like GP38-2s in SF warbonnet, I'm sure there are others out there! I can't see why they do this. I guess they feel they're creating more sales, but in reality they're doing beginners a great disservice by selling them equipment that never existed. It also does their reputation amongst more experienced hobbyists (who know which models to avoid, and will probably not buy the incorrect examples) no good at all.

Do you guys mean 'toylike' or just plain weird? For my money, the most butt-ugly thing I ever saw was a 'Climax' made by MDC. It looked like a gondola with a center cab built over their early diesel mechanism. Noisy little sucker, too! In fact it was so butt-ugly that it was cute!

Marx GP-9. I've got one that's lettered "Santa Fe" but is in UP yellow and gray.

The Model Power F2 is the same as the Marx F unit.

Worst looking HO scale loco
Posted by aloco on Sunday, September 5, 2004 5:23 PM
What's the worst-looking HO scale plastic locomotive you've ever seen? For me, it's gotta be the Model Power F2A. It vaguely resembles an F3, but it's got a nose like a C-Liner. It's so butt-ugly and toy-like that every time I see one I want to stomp on it!
