I have a Loksound 3.5 decoder in my PCM Big Boy and love it except one thing, slow starts. When starting it will make a couple Chuff s then start making a hissing sound. My PCM with the same decoder does the same thing except it stops the hissing sound after a few revaluations of the drivers then it goes to chuff-in.
Big Boy on the other hand will keep up the hissing as long as the speed setting is 7 or below. (SEB)
Any idea on how to set and what CV to change? I think the sound is called Shunting. I use Decoder Pro Computer Throttles and there is a button labeled as Shunt. When I hold the button down, it makes the hissing sound at what ever speed it is.
Decoder was programed my Ulrich Model Trains, engine did not come with a sound decoder.
Hope to get some answers and thanks in advances.

It does sound like a programming issue, but before I took a stab at it, take a look at Loksound's web site. The manuals are on there, and if you can't find your answer there, just give them a call. They have always been very helpful over the phone when I have called!!

NCE über alles!
My Y is the only other steam decoder I have, Ken, after I had both the Trix NYC Mikado and my Riv Allegheny redone with Tsunamis. I hated to part with the peerless slow-mo in the 3.0 and 3.5, respectively, but their sounds that I use most for 'feel good' were terrible in my opinion. Especially the Allegheny...sheeessshhhh.
So, I only have a Trix GG1 and the PCM Y6b with 3.0 and 3.5 left in my stable. The Y, as yours probably does, hisses thecylinder c.ocks at the bottoms of the cylinders until the loco turns the drivers maybe 8-10 times, or if it has stalled due to dirty track or short, it won't hiss at all when the power is restored because it seems to save the last reading. However, my early conversions of all QSI's when they offered them in 2006 also hiss until the drivers have turned about 10 times or the speed picks up.
It is odd that the one item, the Big Boy, first chuffs and THEN reverts to the sounds it ought to make at startup. I have no recollection of that behaviour in my LokSounds. Have you reset that decoder? I take it that if you have, what you get is what Ulrich, or his savvy agent/contractor, programmed as firmware into the decoder. It won't change. You should ask him if he can put you in touch with the person who re-programmed the decoder.
Crandell
That's the cylinder cocks, and I'm pretty sure it's a programmign issue to have it shut off after a certain time, or speed. It's also manually controlled with a function key, so maybe you just have it on all the time.

Funny you brought up the Allegheny Crandell, That is what my 3.5 came out of! Terry From Texas posted he was pulling his out because it sounded like cabooses. I asked him if I could have it? Sent it to me for free.
Bought the speakers from Ulrich and he programed the decoder for free! Reason it sounded bad was not the decoder but the pieces of junk speaker that came in the Allegheny.
I just test the 10 revaluation idea, moved 15 feet and was still making the hissing sound. Sure ruins the slow speed fun.
PS, lay any track lately?

Any idea what Key Randy?
Ken:
If you press F5 once while the engine is standing still, and then move the throttle, does the engine start with "chuffs" or does it still hiss? F5 is a "shift key" - it changes the function of various other keys, and it should also turn off the cylinder cock hiss.
Edit: Ken,this is the way the pcm installed lokpilots are set up.If yours was programmed by someone else,F5 may be a different function. If F5 doesn't work, you might try all the others, and hope that one was programmed as a shift key.

Thanks for all the reply's. I will play , ah Run it some more Tuesday an see if I can find the right F key.
Thanks again.
