Hello Ken from the photos I have seen of your layout over the years. I see you have some cool cliffs I would do the loco in the cave. I don't think it would be to hard to do. Small Peace of track and a junk loco and finde the right spot and your ready. Have a nice day Frank

Hello well Kingofweathering the reason the loco is in the swamp. The engineer disobeyed the speed restriction and the rail on the right rolled over. So the loco came off the rails. And with the speed and the weight of the rolling stock it pushed the loco in the swamp. By the time the wreck train showed up it sunk to deep to get out. So the big boss of the railroad said leave it. That's my story and I am sticking to it.
And for the cattails sure there unrealistic they are made from wire. They are in the far corner of my layout. You cant see them up close. But you can still tell they are cattails. Any ideas on how to make better ones?

I like your swamp. The trees and other shrubbery really fit in well with the scene. I like the cattails. I hope that you are going to add a backdrop or paint the white wall a more "dismal" color. Nice work!

I think those cattails look pretty good - nice idea! I also totally get the idea of the semi-submerged derelict engine.

Kingofweathering really do not understand the logic of the engine in the water. That is what makes that so unrealistic. That just would not ever happen. I would have not even thought to put a rusted out steam engine anywhere on my layout let alone in the water? Really? What would the explanation as to why and how it came to rest partially submerged in a lake or pond? NONE. I hate to be TRUTHFUL but hey honesty is the best medicine. With that said the ultra unrealistic look of the cattails is understandable now.

Hello well I am almost done with the swamp I need to add few lilly pads and some back ground and it s done. here are some pics.
I did learn one thing don't make your pond/swamp to deep it took 3 16oz bottles to get the water up to the edge. At 22$ each they add up quick. I did use a 40% off coupon for each bottle. They only stock one at a time took 3 weeks to fill. But still should did it with one bottle. I add some green paint in the last layer. You can see it if you look by the edge. It looks like a film a of algae. Thanks for the tip Mr B. I made the trees from sunflowers. I used the roots. Have a nice day Frank
Hello Richard yep these were real simple and cheap to make. It cost $2.00 to buy what I needed. I made 14 in about 10 min. They look a bit rough so they are not the best for up close viewing. My swamp is in the far corner of the layout . You can see the swamp but not up close so they look better. When I get my swamp done I post some pics. Have a nice day Frank
Nice, simple idea, will have to give it a try next time I'm doing a wet area. Wanted some around my last pond, but it's a bit too far along to add those now.

Hello I needed some cattails for a swamp. So I tried to make some and they come out ok. So I thought I show how I made them. This is what I used 20ga floral wire for the cattail 14ga stranded wire for the grass around the cattail, some brown and green paint.
I cut the floral wire to 1'' just about 8 scale feet. I cut the 14ga wire to about 1/2 -3/4 of inch. leave a small amount of the coating on the end. Then I painted a small brown spot almost to the end of the 20ga wire. Paint the 14ga wire green. Put the 20ga wire in the middle of the 14ga watch out for wires poking your fingers. Put a small drop of glue to hold it. And they should look like this.
