Thanks for the kind reply. Do you know which road number Allegheny's are DCC ready? Any tips on installation?

Bob,

The Allegheny had a Nathan single chime hooter whistle similar to the B&O EM1, and the N&W class A locomotive. Thanks to the NS for operating N&W 1218 in the 1990's, there are good sounds to give you an idea on what they should sound like. Soundtraxx offers a decoder with pre programmed sounds of a N&W class A. It's the Tsunami decoder for heavy steam locomotives. I've installed these in our two C&O Alleghenies, plus our Bachmann B&O EM1.

Sound decoder for Rivarossi Allegheny

I have researched the Rivarossi HO Alleghenys and I dont like the sound of the Loksound 4 decoders that come equipped with the DCC version of the engine on the newest release. What decoder have you guys been using that has the correct whistle for the C&O Alleghenys? I was thinking of using a Tsunami heavy steam decoder to get a more robust chuff with large high bass speakers and equilizer settings. Which engine version should I get that is DCC ready and sound compatible? Are there any tender modifications that need to be made to fit the decoder or will it plug directly into the DCC plug? What are the electronics like in those engines? What size high bass speakers will fit into the engine? Can you put a speaker up front in the smokebox?
