Maybe some people have problems gaining respect. or making friends
and, like i said in another discussion once, people new to the hobby have limited knowledge that can and will be built up over time, if some forum members don't discourage them. Thats why I'll never post a poll, I'm tooscared to .[B)]

As I noted in my earlier post "Polls are started by members who have nothing to say or add to existing discussions" and I think it still stands.

BTW it is POLL and not POLE! A POLE is something to hang power and telephone lines on! [:D]

Granted - and I use this word guardedly - a FEW polls have been purposeful and insightful. Most, sadly, are either trite, juvenile, or only inspire others to "keep up with the Jones" because "YOU don't have what I DO."

Why don't be strive to make this a venue where we encourage and help one another on our layouts, problem solving issues, and general questions about the hobby and railroading instead of trying to make ourselves "seem" superior to others. I have been helped immeasurably by some more experienced MR's on this website, who have taken the time to answer my novice questions and inquiries.

Perhaps there should be a moratorium or limit on the amount of polls someone is allowed to post in a given amount of time - i.e. once a quarter? (Uh, oh. Am I going to hear cries of censorship and freedom of speech?) Perhaps this will provide more fodder for a future poll...

What color pole seems a little personal,....... don't you think???

How funny is this, a poll about polls. I can think of a least three poll abusers in this forum.

Lets talk trains and tips on trains and skip the polls.

We talk about actively recruiting younger people to take up the hobby. We are always so danged nice to them, I just can't figure out why they aren't more responsive!

It's called Game Cube, PS2, Loud Music........ Kids are into there own thing these days.

Trains are slow and repetitive. Kids are hyped and require instant gratification.

Considering the Age group, I think a Poll on "Do you prefer your Passenger cars with their skirts off, or on, to be most appropriate. - DG

Considering I've started some I'll say yae to to them. But I have to confess they are getting repetitive. But then again we have a lot of new members. Kinda nice in a way as it thins out the cynics!

Sometimes!!!! If they're well thought out, they can be very interesting. Keep in mind that not all of the trains.com forums can do polls. It seems like every once in a while, someone will go through the list and start responding to polls, bringing a bunch back to the front all at once. A couple of my old ones recently popped back up.[swg]

hey, Poles are cool. There's Chopin, Paderewski, the Pope--oh, you meant POLLS! Actually, I kind of enjoy them, it's interesting to find out what other guys are doing as far as locos, rolling stock, freelance vs. prototype--and the inner conversations can get kind of bouncy. Yah, keep 'em. Maybe there should be a separate heading just for them.

Nothing wrong with a poll, if you don't like it then go on to another thread.

Some are fun, some are interesting, and some seem pointless. I really enjoyed it when the Z scalers stuffed the results a while back.
Enjoy

Most polls seem to be started by people who are just seeking stars. I consider it none of their business what type of trains I have or would like to have, how many, what railroad, etc. etc., and don't even look at most of them.

Maybe there could be a cost associated with starting a poll? A $5.00 fee would surely shut them down! [tdn]

I look at them the same way I look at SPAM messages - ignore and move on to the next real message with SUBSTANCE!
