I love the look, Sound, smell, {taste} of a coal fired steamer fired for action!!!

I never did much care for diesels, I call them "moving boxes on wheels". Though, they have won a place in my heart now.

I am fortunate enough to live near Steamtown NAtional Historic Park in Scranton, PA where, if they can help it, they will always have a steam loco to run on certain days.

Strasburg Railroad is not really  to much further away.

I hope that while I am alive and able, there will always be a steamer running somewhere close by to go see in action!

And Maybe I have over-romanticized steam! {but darn its a good romance!}

Thank you so much for posting it.

Got me almost crying.Crying    I wonder if the kids interviewed in the beginning have the same view today? They called the steamers "Old Fashion" You get the sense that the old time railroad men really loved them.

I was born in 1961, so I missed out on steam completely.  The only steam locos I've seen are in films, videos, and museums.

You haven't necessarily missed out completely.  I'll be going in June to NE Oregon (from Kansas City!) to spend a day running a steam locomotive.  It's a "bucket list" item.  40 years ago this year I was running steam in Green Bay at the National Railroad Museum, and I wanted to do it one more time.  There are a few places around the country you can go to run steam, and a bunch more to see it, smell it, and ride behind it.  Do it while you still can!

Spent many a day in school listening to that announcer on NFB films, glad to see a C.P.R. locomotive at the end of a C.N.R. film. the music was by Pete Seegar.

I was just thinking of the same thing. Running down to the office to get the old projector and wheeling it back to class. The National Film Board made thousands of films on everything from A to Z. Watching a movie on a subject really adds to understanding it.

I remember we were suppose to watch a film once on "The Snowbirds". They sent the wrong one and we watched the film about the Royal Canadian Air forces precision flying team called "The Snowbirds" instead of a film on the migration of the "feathered variety" of Snowbird. We boys enjoyed that one more I'm sure.Laugh

I always love to watch that film. A couple of interesting things I noticed were at the 4:16 mark the lanterns hanging on the back of the Loco. That could be a nice little detail to add to a loco on the layout.

Also at the17:20 mark did you notice the guys hat? It said "East York Model Railroad Society".

And at the end they showed 2816 rolling along. Here is a pic of her parked near my house for the night when she was out to the coast on tour, some 60 plus years later.

Another great film on that site is "The Railroaders" Always worth a look.

What's NOT to love about steam.  Granted, it was more labor-intensive maintenance-wise for the RRs and crews.  However, a steamer is always a head-turner - with young and old alike - and a joy and fascination to watch visually.  Long live steam!...

Thanks for sharing this wonderful video with us!

It pretty much sums up my feelings about steam locos. I have a passion for railroads, but an affectionate love for steam locomotives ever since my dad took me to the train station as a toddler.

Browsing the Canadian National Film Board website, I ran across this very nice old short film on the transition from steam to diesel.  Thought some of you folks might enjoy it as well.
