I think that most of them use the then very popular Faller A.M.S. car system. this was a adaption of a slotrace system.

One thing that I would love to be able to do on a layout someday is to have a few American vehicles, like GMC city buses, Cheverolet taxis, or even a garbage truck running on the streets of my HO scale town, while the railroad goes about getting its chores done.

I hope this isn't a far fetched fantasy as years back I used to wi***hat model trains could have whistles. I saw this come true 2 decades later.

Faller is the only one that produce oand offers complete cars.

And SB-Modellbau at Olching (near Munich / Germany) http://www.sb-modellbau.com offers a conversation kit under item number 101.
