"How To" Layout Books...

Matt, you need to get the book How To Build Model Railroad Benchwork. It's a great tool to at least get you off and running, but it mainly sticks to just that,how to build. As far as wiring goes I plan to go DCC myself and has purchased the Digitrax How To book, but haven't read it yet!!

PRRMan, Jim's ideas are great. Follow through on those and plan, plan, plan. Then if you can, talk to a local MR group about what your planning. The MR benchwork system uses riser to elevate the track. So at each elevation point on your plan think of a piece of wood attached to the cross member sticking up that height. You'll need to put other pieces in between at progressively lower or higher height to get to the next elevation point. Use drywall screws to fasten the wood pieces together. You can buy these real cheap in bulk at any home center and they don't need pre-drilled pilot holes. Also, the allow for removal if you have to readjust the elevation. A good reversable drill or rechargable electric screw driver will be a good investment. The main thing is to keep the track bed at a smooth and proper incline....Walt

If you are building a layout w/ bi-level benchwork, I strongly suggest geeting Kalmbah's benchwork book. As far a wiring is concerned, if this is a bigger layout, take a long look @ DCC. There are a couple of good books on the DCC subject as well. Spend time planning benchwork and electrical. The track laying and scenery techniques are the same for larger layouts, but there's just a lot more of it. As far as how much track, your hobby shop can give you some idea. Don't skimp or ru***he early phasess of your layout. Good luck and happy railroading!

I am about to build my first "real" HO empire, w/ 2 levels. My last layout was plywood on tables... For this venture, I'd like to use benchwork. All the Kalmbach track plan books I have only give you that - track plans. They don't tell me how to build the bench work for it, how to make it two levels, how to wire it, how much track, etc. Are there any books out ther that tell you how to build a layout, start to finish (bigger than 4x8, more like 20x8), or do I have to buy a separate book for each step??? Thanks for the help!!!
