Heck, I've seen something resembling a prototype for that...to avoid having a diamond on the UP mainline, the California State Railroad Museum moves rolling stock between the Sacramento Locomotive Works shops area and the museum, Central Pacific station and Sacramento Southern tourist/freight line via a drop-in chunk of "snap-track" that is inserted over the top of the UP mainline for a few minutes--just long enough for a switcher to move whatever cars need moving from one side of the tracks to the other.

I liked that magazine. They're Observation car was great. I've not done anything yet but I'm inspired.

I have seen a photo for a similar prototype in a book about military railways (used to carry supplies to the trenches) in France during World War 1. The 2' gauge trench railway had to cross a standard guage (Franch National RR) track with very little clearance.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Whimsey Railroading??
Posted by RowanB on Thursday, August 19, 2004 3:36 PM
Since the demise of that Whimsey RR mag, does anyone still 'do whimsey'?
Seems to me that taking the hobby to another level needs the support of us somewhat mildly 'deviate' model railroaders....
The photo attached is of a model I made based on the prototype shown in an old 'Whimsey' mag.
Any others out there?
