IF YOU CAN FIND AND OLDER LIONEL OR MARX FOR ENGINE AND TENDER,THEN FIND PLASTIC CARS TO PULL BEHIND AS THE PLASTIC CARS DONT COST AS MUCH,WITH O GUAGE YOU HAVE ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT TRAIN,MAKERS TO GO WITH.....HAVE FUN BOTH YOUNG AND OLD.... VINCENT

"O" gauge 3-rail is cheaper and easier to work with. You could build a very nice layout on top of 2' or 3' high bookcases.

Best of all, you (or someone in your family) may have some old Lionel trains. The old Lionel steam engines are the best engines for a 3 year old because the wheels turn when you pu***hem. That's not true for diesels. Or for the newer steam engines.

I want to build a shelf in my son's room for a train to travel around. My question is which scale is more cost efficient and or easier to work with? He is 3 and I want to start out slowly.
