I missed the f-unit thread, but for there I'd have to day CP's red and gray, and Action Red.
For the PA, D&H Blue.

I had to ask my 23 year old daughter what 'tightest' meant. She told me it meant 'best' which I had sorta thought it did.

Nickel plate bluebird scheme but the Wabash Ran the Bluebird
I think they'd be rather protective of that name
Well it is a nickname that WE use today

If the CB&Q would have had PA's though, that would definently be my favorite scheme...

Solid silver? Solid white with a red stripe? Off white with a red stripe? I don't think that would complement the lines of the locomotive at all.

If we are talking fantasy - How about one done in NP Lowey two-tone green. American Flyer make up an example.

But because of all those reasons it is possibly the most valuable marketing icon on the planet. A couple years ago I saw some studies that showed any magazine (not just train related) that has a AT&SF war bonnet on the cover sells 10% more copies. All that and BNSF abandon it. Now there's a good business decision!

My top three favorite "tightest" paint schemes on an Alco PA are:
SOUTHERN PACIFIC - Daylight
COTTON BELT - Daylight
ST. LOUIS SOUTHWESTERN - Daylight

I'm not shouting, that's just the way they printed the road names on their DAYLIGHT PAs.

No bias here!!

Although, the NKP, D&H, Wabash, and D&RGW deserve honorable mention.

Don't recall who said it first, but any paint scheme would be tight on the big Alco, of course the Lightning Stripe from the Central, or the War Bonnet in either red or blue, and the NKP Blue Birds stand out. Todays BNSF and NS need not apply paint to the remaining survivors, PLEASE!!!!

And Andre,
The Pennsy would appear on one of my top lists, it'd get first place on "over-rated and over produced roadnames"!

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking about BLI's upcoming Pennsy K4 this very afternoon and trying to figure out what it is about the Pennsy that I don't like (apart from the fact that Slobbering Pennsy Freaks get more than their fair share of model railroad goodies). It finally came to me. The Pennsy had absolutely no esthetic sense whatsoever.

Andre

The Pennsy had their way, good or bad, but if you had stood at trackside and watched a K4 at speed or even at a station waiting on the call to go, you would overlook the odd way the Standard of the world railroad built thier engines.

You are also correct about the cabs being short of space, but we were almost always invited up to visit for a few minutes at the coaling tower, and on a cold day, it was great..

Mark--"Tight" also means "Cool", "Groovy," "Rad" or in the case of this old fart, "Really striking," LOL!

Since the paint goes right onto the skin of the loco, all paint jobs are equally "tight." Or am I missing some corruption of the word "tight" in this case?

OK, what about the best PA paint scheme for railroads that never owned PA's?

Someone already mentioned the CB&Q, but I think the other Hill roads would've done it justice as well. American Flyer (I think) made a PA in NP's two tone green that looks awfully good, and a PA in GN green and orange (with the yellow pinstripes) would've looked pretty spiffy.

Other nominees might be the Western Pacific's orange and silver, or KCS's black, red and yellow. Any others?

Ya see. In threads like this you find out information. I thought the beloved SF warbonnet was a clear favorite among the people. I was wrong.

D&H seems to be the winner.

I'd say the SP Daylight scheme - this worked with the long nose on the PA to make it look even longer, lower, and sleeker. I also think the small anti-climb pilots they fitted give the loco an interesting look - kind of elegant and tough at the same time. Having said that, I've been looking at a Lehigh Valley example on eBay (Proto 2k) and might well buy one of these at some point - it's a subtle scheme that looks very nice.

Oh, and a PS: How the Heck did we get into a Pennsy-bashing forum? I thought it was about Alco PA's.

I've got a 3-way tie. SP "Daylight", Rio Grande Grande Gold and Silver (single stripe) and Santa Fe 'Warbonnet.' The nose on the PA was just MADE for that Warbonnet scheme.

Santa Fe RED WARBONNET. Everyone else seems to prefer D&H though. It's like the same scheme!
