Walther's Little River Mining Kit

For what it's worth, this mine kit is a selectively compressed version of a mine on the D&RGW Craig branch and lasted into the 1990's.  Lucky for me since I model the D&RGW!

Thanks, Tom. I have to admit that this kit was a little challenging in that gluing the walls would have been a real pain if I hadn't already invested in some of those clamps from Coffmann Right Clamps.

I scratch built the power house and the mine head structure.  I built it to represent a specific Illinois shaft mine.

The backdrop is not complete in that area, hence the black foam core board to tidy it up a bit for the photo.

I don't live in coal country, but the Little River is fairly similar to some of the larger mining structures we had out here in the Northern Mines of California during the 1940's when the gold mines were still in operation.  I adapted mine to a hard-rock gold mine, the "Champion".

It's a neat kit.

Here are some pics of mine...

The bare spots between the supports on the tipple(?) have been covered up since that picture was taken. I got some real coal from a buddy that works at a coal fired power plant, crumbled into smaller chunks and glue between and along side of the rails.

A year or two ago there was a thread on Walther's Little River Mining kit where everyone that had it posted a photo of how they finished it, eg. painting, weathering, ground cover etc.  Many members, like myself now, were just getting started with theirs.  I'd like to see those again please whether they've changed much or not.

I don't have the box right now but the actual name is maybe New River Mine?
