KADEE releases new #118 Shelf Type Coupler
Posted by chapmon on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 11:34 AM
I'm passing some info on that may interest everyone:

.Kadee has released a new coupler (#118) which is a shelf type. These are typically seen on tank cars to prevent over-turning in a derailment.

According to the instructions they sent, here is the data:

Type H - adopted as an alternate standard in 1937 aNnd standardized in 1947 for tightlock couplers on passenger cars.

Type F - improved Type H and standardized in 1947, and adopted as an alternate standard in 1954.

Tank Car types - Started as Type SBE in 1968, the top and bottom shelf Type SE and SF were standards for tank cars adopted in 1975.

According to their sheet, the type SBE, SE, and SF were started to retro-fit tank cars around 1970.

This is all in their instruction sheets provided with the couplers and is quoted from the instructions above.

With a slight modification, they can also be used for a Type F or H coupler for passenger cars.
