What scale do you use?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 30, 2004 8:57 PM
What is in your layout?

I am in the process of building an HO layout. I plan to have a river (a double track truss bridge above) It will have mountains near the back and the rest will have residential buildings on the left side and comercial and indusrial sarounding a yard on the right.

How about you?

O gauge. There's no scale to what I run, though.

I have both HO and G, with HO being the primary one. Cost is a big consideration when the cheapest G-scale locomotives cost as much or more than a Broadway Limited HO-scale engine with sound and DCC, and one piece of G-scale rolling stock is equal to 10 HO models.

Look quick Ben, my vote made O twice as popular as HO and N. Like that trend will last.[swg]

It seems we need to repeat this poll every month or two for the newcomers to the forum.Oh well.[:)] I doubt too many people have changed scales since the last poll. [swg]

I use HO and O scale.

I have a working HO layout with two main lines.

The O is not yet runing.

I truly do think 'N' is the scale of the future. Just as '0' lost market to 'HO', I think 'HO' will eventually lose market to 'N'.

People just don't want to devote that much of their houses to hobbies any more. Even though houses keep getting bigger, unclaimed space in the basement keeps getting smaller. The ability to put more train in less space with 'N' scale will ultimately result in it becoming the predominant scale.

(Until 20 years later, when 'Z' dominates.)

I think that HO scale will be here to stay. HO can also be put into smaller spaces just as N scale.

Most of all HO scale is a perfect medium between size and detail. It is a rather small model and yet Small details are not to small to add in.

Also with N and Z scale every time you touch something you are going to break something.

HO scale for me I really considered N for a while but after watching many layouts at train shows I just couldnt appreciate it. So I stuck with HO
I see the argument for N since you can run longer realistic trains.
I just am not ready for thicker glasses to see the tiny trains

Going back to my argument about popular scales; It looks like N will have some catching-up to do to "compete" with HO.

LOL [swg][(-D][swg][(-D]
to make things more obvious I could change my signature to;

L-UP-HO

or if you have problems with a certain RR company :

L-[censored]-HO or L- [soapbox] -HO

[swg][(-D][swg][(-D]
L [censored] O

HO scale here.
I dabbled in N for a couple of years then went back to HO scale

HO here. N is great, but it's really to small and doesn't bring out as much detail as HO. Plus HO is cheaper. Can you imagine what a sound equipted/DCC ready loco would cost in N?

What scale do I use? Well, I've got a nice, little Weight Watcher's food scale that I use for weighing my cars...[;)]
